A Message from the University of Tennessee This is an exciting time at the University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design. In 2015, our college will be 50 years old. Our graduates have experienced extraordinary successes ranging from industry leaders like Robin Klehr Avia (BSID 1976), presently Chair of the Board at Gensler, the largest design and architecture firm in the world, to emerging architect Josh Flowers (B.Arch. 2001), one of eight young professionals across the nation honored by the American Institute of Architects with their Young Architect Award in 2014, and a speaker at this year’s AIAS FORUM. At the University of Tennessee, we strive to be at the forefront of changes that will enable the best and brightest students to pursue entrepreneurial initiatives, to lead creative teams, and to accelerate innovation. To do that, we are intensifying our efforts to bring new energy, strength, and purpose to our curriculum. In the past two years, we have added 18 faculty and staff members to an already strong cohort. Many of these faculty will be a part of the activities of FORUM. To elevate our teaching and learning capabilities, we also have installed over $2.5 million in new equipment and infrastructure upgrades to our facilities, including 400 state-of-the-art student workstations in the award-winning Art + Architecture Building, and the acquisition of our 20,000 square-foot Fab Lab, an innovation hub and design studio in a superbly renovated building in the heart of downtown Knoxville. We are particularly fortunate to be embedded in Knoxville, an emerging American city at a moment of intense revitalization. Through our Governor’s Chair for Energy + Urbanism––a five-year collaboration between Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the UT College of Architecture + Design––we use our combined intellectual capital, design expertise, and scientific capacity to conduct forward-looking experiments that focus on the vast, complex, and urgent issues that face our cities and natural environment. Keith Boswell, Technical Partner at SOM and a UT alumnus, will be a keynote during FORUM. As a member of the Governor’s Chair team, we are excited that he will be sharing his expertise as one of the world’s leading building envelope experts with architecture students from across the country. As the demands of practice change at an unprecedented pace, it is crucial to have an educational environment that supports innovative learning and develops intellectual agility. Our college is keenly aware that we are preparing students for a workplace that will be unlike the past. To meet the challenges of the future––to be ready for the world––our students work with cutting-edge design and fabrication technologies, engage with faculty members and visitors with specialized expertise, and participate in study abroad programs centered in such locales across the globe. To enrich the learning experiences of our students, we engage research partners across disciplines––from engineering and agriculture to biology and business. We challenge ourselves to think about design from the scale of molecules to manufacturing. To reinforce the idea that design is a competitive advantage, we aspire to create value for everyone involved with our community. We are privileged to share this very community, through the diligent work of our AIAS UTK Chapter, as host of REVERB in Nashville.
