A new home from canvas After last weekend’s devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal, Samaritan’s Purse is rushing aid to families who are living in tents. Some 70,000 people have seen their homes turned to rubble; others are too afraid to sleep inside because of continuing aftershocks. After Nanda Gopal’s home was shaken to the ground, he and his family have been organising a tent community in their village. The majority of people here work as farmers, craftsmen, and taxi drivers. The earthquake destroyed 75 percent of their homes and killed 20 people.

“Everyone was silent and there were no smiles on their faces for two days,” said Binay, Nanda’s 23year-old son. He became emotional after talking about the children who lost their lives - specifically a three-monthold that passed away in the arms of her mother who fell from her house during the earthquake. “I feel terrible for the people,” he said. “We see the worries in their eyes for their families.” Samaritans Purse is flying in a first consignment of large family tents from India to provide shelter for those who have lost their homes. The same airlift is carrying plastic sheeting for emergency shelters, hygiene items, 16,000 blankets and 2,500 kitchen kits to replace bedding and equipment lost under the rubble.
