About Mike: In March 2011, Michael Meehan noticed an increase in weakness in his arms and legs. This weakness progressed quickly and he no longer has use of his arms and is unable to walk or stand. In January of 2013, Michael was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a rapidly progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that can strike anybody at anytime. The cause is unknown and there is no cure or successful treatment. There can be significant costs for medical care, equipment, and home health care. ALS leaves people unable to walk, talk, and care for themselves; however, their minds remain able to think and reason. People with ALS live an average of two to five years after they have been diagnosed. ALS has left Mike unable to work and is totally dependent for all aspects of his care. Mike is in need of specialized care, equipment, and assistive technology in order to perform basic daily activities. As Mike’s condition quickly progresses, so do his needs. Mike lives in Frankfort with his wife Lori, a teacher at Mokena Elementary School; his daughter Casey, 22, a senior at St. Xavier University; and his son Patrick, 19, a sophomore at Illinois State University. Mike worked as President of Quality Storage Products up until September of 2012 when his illness left him unable to work. Mike has always been an active member of the Frankfort community. He was instrumental in starting the Frankfort Falcons, a youth football league where he served as a coach and board member for several years. Mike’s love of football began at an early age. He played football in both elementary and high school and then was honored with a four year scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. Michael went on to become a freshmen football coach for Lincoln-Way East High School. Mike’s hope is to spend as much time with his family as possible; however, this requires specialized assistance and equipment such as a wheelchair assessable lift van. His current dream is to be able to see his daughter walk across the stage as she graduates from St Xavier University and to see son Patrick play football at Illinois State University. Your donations will assist Mike in fulfilling his dreams.
