Amateur Growers Regulations 1) Entry Information (a) Entry Fees - £5 for 5 entries, 50p for each additional entry. Junior classes £2.50 entry fee. There is no limit to the amount of entries per exhibitor. Entry Fees must be paid in full when submitting an entry form. Entries must be on the official form, photocopies will be accepted. (b) Cancellation of entries - If you are unable to exhibit please advise the Event Administration Manager as soon as possible and in any event not later than seven days before the Show. (c) Conditions of entry - An Exhibitor may not enter or stage more than one exhibit in the same class. The same exhibit may not be entered in more than one class. Exhibitors may not substitute one entry for another. (d) Late entries - Under no circumstances will entries be accepted after the closing date.
2) Instructions to Exhibitors (a) Staging Times - Staging may take place from 12 noon to 6:00pm on the Tuesday before the show and from 9:00am Wednesday until 6:50am Thursday. PLEASE SEE HONEY (PAGE 30), BAKING & PRESERVES (PAGE 34), FLORAL ARTS (PAGE 36) – AS TIMES AND DATES DIFFER. All AMATEUR VEHICLES to be off the show ground by 7:15 am on the day of the show. (b) Staging Passes - Passes will be sent out with class confirmation letter. (c) Exhibitor’s Cards (Class Cards) - These may be collected from the Flower Show office from 12 noon on Tuesday until 10:00am on Wednesday the week of the Show. After this they will be available from the relevant Marquee. Exhibitors are encouraged to check thoroughly the details printed on the exhibit cards, as any exhibit staged without the appropriate card will be disqualified. (d) Signage - Exhibitors may not re-name any plants, flowers etc. already having a recognized name. No trade or business cards or any advertising matter of any description may be displayed near the exhibits. (e) Vases etc. - Southport Flower Show will provide vases for all classes where appropriate, and plates for Vegetable and Fruit classes. (f) Show Admission - One non-transferable ticket to admit once only will be issued per application. These tickets will made available at the time of staging and will not be sent out in the post. (g) Car Park Pass - One non-transferable car park pass will be issued, if you require a car park pass, please request which day on the application form. (h) Sell Off & Break Down - Society Bureau plants and cut flower exhibits can be sold off at 4pm Sunday. All exhibits will be sold unless an Exhibitor has specifically requested on the application form that they will be collecting their exhibit. Exhibits that are to be collected can be removed from 4:15pm on the last day of the show. All benches should be cleared by 5:30pm on the final day. All Exhibits, if not sold or collected, will be otherwise disposed of to facilitate the clearing of the marquee. A Breakdown Pass will be allocated to Exhibitors wishing to remove their exhibits. The Pass will allow entry to the Showground from 4:00pm on the final day. Vehicles will only be allowed to enter the Showground upon announcement from the show organisers. (l) VASES WILL BE PROVIDED BY SOUTHPORT FLOWER SHOW AND MUST BE USED If any exhibitor wishes to use a smaller or larger size vase for a particular class; no penalty in judging will be incurred. However specified vases should be used wherever possible and where mentioned in a particular class description.

Amateur Growers (a) Judging - Judging will take place at 7:00am on the Thursday of the Show for all classes except Honey, Baking & Preserves this will be judged on the Wednesday evening before the Show at 6:00pm. The Judge’s Decision will be final. Feedback from judges will be available at 11:00am on the day of the show, at the manager’s office in the Amateur Marquee. (b) Prize Money - Prize monies will be paid by cheque by the end of September (c) Trophies - Exhibitors winning trophies may collect them from the Flower Show office after midday on the first morning of the Show. The trophies must be returned to the office each night and collected the next morning. The Trophy Award Card must be presented when claiming a trophy so as to correctly identify the exhibitor. All trophies that are taken away after the Show must be insured to the relevant cost of replacement, a copy of the insurance document should be sent to the Flower Show office. Exhibitors must not arrange for the engraving of Trophies or Plinths. All Trophies should be returned, in a clean condition, to Southport Flower Show offices, Victoria Park, by the 31st May of the following year. (d) The Daily Mirror Trophy - The Daily Mirror "Xenia Field" Silver Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the best exhibit entered by an amateur exhibitor who is under the age of 21 years on 17th August 2018. Exhibitors wishing to be considered for this award must submit all entries in this section of the show no later than the closing date. All under 21 competitors must put their date of birth on the entry form. (e) The Amateur Gardening Trophy - All 1st prize winners in each individual championship (e.g. class 12, class 37) will be entered, to be judged to become the overall champion and will be awarded The Amateur Gardening Trophy (A02) and £100 prize money. (f) Concerns - Any concerns regarding judging must be made in writing and handed to the General Manager at the Flower Show office before 12:00 noon on the first day of the Show. (g) Forfeiture of Prize Money - Any Exhibitor obtaining or attempting to obtain a prize fraudulently will forfeit the whole of any prize money they may otherwise be entitled to. (h) Results - The results will be published on the website by 6pm on the first day of the show; please do not call the office on the first day before 6pm as results will not be available.
(a) Dogs - Dogs are welcome at the event but must be kept on a lead at all times and owners must clean up after them. Bins are located throughout the showground. Unfortunately dogs are NOT allowed in the catering or food marquees (with the exception of official assistance dogs). (b) Vehicles - All vehicles entering the Showground must display the appropriate Vehicle Pass, with all details completed. Vehicles are not allowed inside the Marquees at any time. There is a strict 5 mph speed limit. (c) No Smoking - Smoking is not allowed in any of the marquees at any time, this also includes ecigarettes. (d) Fire Precautions - Nothing of an inflammable or explosive nature must be brought to the Showground. The use of naked lights or primus type stoves within the marquees is prohibited at all times. (a) Definitions - The words ‘kind’ & ‘cultivar’ are used in the following sense: Sweet Peas, Roses, Carnations etc. are distinct ‘kinds’ of flowers. “Fragrant Cloud”, “Peace”, “Superstar”, is distinct ‘cultivars’ of Roses. An “Amateur” is a person who grows plants, fruits or vegetables solely for enjoyment or for the domestic use of the produce, and that they must not be growing for only “pecuniary advantage” and must have grown or owned the plant/s for, at least 6 months. No Nurseryman, Seedsman, Florist, Market Gardeners, nor their assistants or employees who grow or advertise garden or orchard produce for the purpose of sale can show as amateurs or gardeners. (b) Exhibits - Whilst every effort will be made to protect and secure the exhibits, Southport Flower Show Ltd or any of their staff/volunteers will not be held responsible for any thefts or damage to exhibits.

Quality and cultural skill will be the basis of judgement. There is no restriction on the size of pot or other container which maybe used in these classes. Each plant or undivided clump must be placed in a separate pot or other container. Exhibitors are reminded that the staging is 1m deep. The Happiland Trophy (A102) will be awarded to the competitor winning the greatest number of 1st prizes in Classes 6 - 10. In the event of a tie, the trophy will be withheld. In judging the exhibits, points will be awarded for: (1) Rarity, (2) Quality, (3) Arrangement, Planting, etc. Exhibits in classes 122, 124 and 130 to 133, to be shown in pots or pans not exceeding 29cm outside diameter, classes 125 to 129 not exceeding 36cm outside diameter. In the case of square or rectangular pans, the stated measurements apply to the longest diagonal. Plants must have been cultivated by the exhibitor for not less than six months before the first day of the show. Exhibits must be bona fide property of the exhibitor, and all hive products shown must be the produce of the exhibitor’s own bees. Wax must be rendered and prepared by the exhibitor. Southport Flower Show will send to exhibitors, small adhesive labels except in class 249, where the exhibit card will suffice. These labels should be affixed in the case of jars, about half an inch from the bottom, and in the case of Cut Comb Honey and Shallow Frame, at the top right hand corner on the front. Exhibits must not bear any mark or label other than adhesive labels referred to in section (b) of this regulation except in Classes 244, 245, 248, 249, 260 and 269. Exhibits will be staged by the Show Stewards except in Classes 244, 248 and 249, but exhibitors may stage their own exhibits if they so desire. No two or more persons may exhibit the produce from the same Apiary in any class other than in partnership. Comb Honey. Cut Comb Honey must be shown in standard transparent 227g (8oz) containers with transparent snap-on tops and must have a gross weight of between 200g and 255g (7-9oz). All extracted Honey must be exhibited in plain squat honey jars except in 249, 263 & 270, which must be of uniform size and shape in each exhibit, with secure, easily removable covers, to the satisfaction of the Judges. Granulated (Class 265) Honey may only be exhibited in the classes bearing such a description, but may be included in Classes 246, 247, 249, 263, 265, 266, 270, 276 & 282. Weights of wax specified in the schedule are subject to a tolerance of +/- 10%.
The Cook Trophy (A48) will be awarded for the best exhibit of Light Honey in the Show. The Southport and District Beekeepers Trophy (A52) will be awarded for the best exhibit of Dark Honey in the show. CONTEMPORARY FLORAL DESIGN Over the past Nine years the Contemporary Floral Design Competition has become an established part of the show. The competition has succeeded in attracting new designers to Southport and encouraged some of our regular floral exhibitors to take a walk on the wild side! With exhibition classes and innovative staging, designed to stretch your imagination and skill the standard of entries into the competition has been truly inspirational and a delight for visitors. The competition is open to everyone and specifically aimed at encouraging freedom of expression, thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of floral contemporary design. GENERAL CONDITIONS Plant material used in the classes need not have been grown by the exhibitor but must have been arranged and staged by them in the Contemporary Floral Design marquee. Items requiring special time or expertise may be brought assembled for incorporation in any class. Space allowed is stated for each individual class and exhibitors are encouraged to keep their designs within the given measurements. Marquee sides are draped with black fabric. STAGING TIME Tuesday 14th August from 4pm until 6pm Wednesday 15th August from 9am until Thursday 16th August 6.45am DEFINITION OF EXHIBIT A design exhibit is composed of natural plant material, with or without accessories, contained within a space as specified within the ‘class’ pages. PRIZE MONEY PRIZE MONEY IN CLASSES 1 - 6 WILL BE AWARDED AS FOLLOWS 1st £60 2nd £30 3rd £20 AWARDS BEST IN COMPETITION will be awarded £60 and The Tony Cafferkey Memorial Trophy (A128) THE MOST INNOVATIVE EXHIBIT will be awarded at the judges' discretion. With 1 vertical, centered wire division and 3 equally spaced horizontal wire divisions, placed within the frame.
