From Gall and Gage to Now: Advances in Mapping The Living Human Brain Presented by Professor Derek Jones Wednesday 22nd November 2017 6.00pm – 8.00pm Mercy Lecture Theatre Building 404 - Melbourne Campus Australian Catholic University Young Street (off 115 Victoria Parade) Fitzroy VIC 3065 Just over 200 years ago, German physician Franz Josef Gall pioneered the art of phrenology. About 50 years later, railway worker Phineas Gage became one of the first volunteers for direct mapping of brain function. Today we can peer inside the brain in incredible detail and quantify so many features. In this second lecture from the series, Professor Derek Jones will introduce these advances and show the ‘cutting edge’ of neuroimaging research, explaining how the different methods work, and discussing the implications for understanding the brain in health and disease. About the presenter Professor Derek Jones is Director of the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC). He holds an Investigator Award from the Wellcome Trust, leads a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award, and is Director of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded National Microstructural Imaging Facility. His research focuses on characterisation of tissue microstructure, and he has over 130 papers in this field. He is a Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), of the Royal Society for Biology and a Professorial Fellow at the ACU Centre for Disability and Developmental Research.
