April 12, 2016 Miles D. White Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Abbott Laboratories U.S. Corporate Headquarters 100 Abbott Park Road Abbott Park, Illinois 60064-3500 Re: Policy on engineered nanomaterials
Dear Mr. White, I am writing on behalf of Friends of the Earth U.S. to request your company’s policy in relation to use of engineered nanomaterials (engineered particles which are less than 500 nanometers in size) in your company’s food and infant formula products. Friends of the Earth is documenting company policies regarding the use of engineered nanomaterials in these products. A growing body of science indicates that engineered nanomaterials pose risks to the health of consumers and the environment. These ingredients are already making their way into the food supply in absence of mandatory safety assessment, oversight or labeling. Consumers are increasingly concerned and are beginning to ask if they can purchase food and products they can trust to be free of engineered nanomaterials. We therefore encourage you inform us of your policy on the matter so that we can communicate your position as accurately as possible. The closing date for receipt of policies is Tuesday April 26th, 2016. Please send your company policy to
[email protected] or to our address below. Please do not hesitate to contact us at 510-900-3145 to discuss this important issue, or to arrange a meeting. We believe that this is an issue of vital importance and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Lisa Archer Director, Food and Technology Program Friends of the Earth U.S.
