Scripture references: Genesis 14:11–20; Leviticus 27:30–32; Malachi 3:10; 1 Corinthians 4:2 The Bible tells us to give offerings to the church. Giving is a way we can bless others and also a way God can bless us.
1. What Is a Tithe? The Bible tells us to give one-tenth of our income to the church. This is called a tithe. The Old Testament teaches that one-tenth of everything we earn belongs to God. If it belongs to God, we should give it to Him and not keep it for ourselves. Do you know how much one-tenth is? Count out ten pennies. Ten pennies make 10¢, or one dime. One out of ten pennies is one-tenth of 10¢. If your parents give you one dollar as an allowance, you should give one-tenth as an offering to God. One dollar is the same as ten dimes, so one-tenth is one dime. We give this money to the church to help support its ministries. Without it, the church cannot show Jesus’ love to others by helping the poor, reaching the lost, and discipling new Christians. Our tithes are part of God’s plan to grow His kingdom. BFP: 429
2. Abraham Pays Tithes Abraham was the first person in the Bible to pay a tithe. After a great battle,
ABRAHAM GIVES TO GOD
Abraham took back all the things his enemies had stolen from him. A man named Melchizedek came out to meet Abraham. Melchizedek was a king and a priest. He said a blessing over Abraham, then Abraham gave him one-tenth of everything he had recovered from his enemies. BFP: 46, 430
3. A Good Steward Abraham was a good steward of the blessings God had given him. He honored God by giving back one-tenth of all his goods. In doing this, Abraham acknowledged that it was God who gave him the victory over his enemies. We call this being a good steward. A steward is someone who takes care of someone else’s property. In olden days, a king who traveled to another land would leave his castle and all his goods in the steward’s care. The king expected that everything would still be there when he returned. He trusted his steward not to steal from him but to give everything back when he returned. God has made us His stewards. God’s blessings make us able to work a job and earn money. In this way God provides us with food and all we need. By paying a tithe to the church, we recognize that everything we have comes from God. BFP: 559
