Why is it important for 1st year students? • To succeed you need a solid knowledge of the opportunities and services offered to you. • It is important to begin college with an end goal in mind – whatever that looks like to you. • You can begin to build your resume in your first semester.

NAVIGATING OUR DIVISION’S LINGO Cooperative Education Connects students’ academic study to a series of meaningful professional experiences through alternating semesters of full-time paid positions related to their major

Academic Internship Program Connects students’ academic study to a part-time or fulltime internship with a faculty advisor assisting them along the way.

Experiential Learning Students combine reflection with structured participation in community-based projects to achieve specified learning outcomes as a part of an academic course and/or program requirement

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION Founded at UC in 1906 Alternating Semesters of full-time, paid work experience and oncampus class room instruction that lead total from three to five total experiences prior to graduation Faculty-led instruction & advising in professional development, job search, selection, and reflection Each work term is assessed by the faculty advisor, employer, and student Mandatory for the following as a 5-Year Program: • College of Engineering & Applied Science • College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning • Information Technology Students

ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP For non-cooperative education (co-op) majors PROGRAM (AIP) Students earn academic credit for their unique internships catered to the student’s interest Faculty-led instruction and advising in professional development, job search, selection, and reflection after experiences Each internship is assessed by the faculty advisor, employer, and student Flexible structure: • Internships are usually part-time, minimum 10 hours/week • Students generally take classes while on internship • Multiple internships can be completed Students have the opportunity to create their own internship

PRE-HEALTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (PHIP) Professional development for healthcare careers Real-world experience through shadowing, volunteering, and internships in healthcare settings (1-3 credit hour options) Support in preparing for a competitive application to professional school Exploration of a variety of health professions Opportunities to learn the human side of health care **Required for all Medical Science majors**

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES International Co-Op Program (ICP) • Germany and Japan • Intensive language and cultural courses • Available only to co-op students Faculty-Led Study Abroad • Short-term (2 weeks) • Company site visits and cultural emersion • Academic credit The International Experience Programs • Singapore, Hong Kong, Toronto, Cape Town, Santiago • Full-time semester long work experience • All UC undergraduate majors

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH, SCHOLARLY ENDEAVORS, & CREATIVE PRACTICES (URSC) Peer-to-peer mentoring program, R.E.C.O.N. (Research, Education, and Creative Opportunities Network), is faculty-led that provides a social and scholarly network for researchers Annual conference showcases student’s passion, talents, research, and results Practical and thematic workshops enhance the undergraduate research experience Continually looking to expand with external entities to help students explore all avenues of research

Students can participate in mock interviews to make sure they are prepared for the challenge of real interviews.
