ASSOCIATION OF COLORADO INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS Boulder, Colorado July 1, 2019 INTRODUCING ACIS The Executive Director position for the Association of Colorado Independent Schools is a truly outstanding educational management and leadership opportunity. As you will read in the following pages, the Association has 36 member schools, which represent an incredible amount of educational and regional diversity throughout our programs, our student bodies, and in the types of schools we represent. The group is made up of 36 outstanding and very different heads of school. This is an organization that is extraordinarily collegial. We are seeking assistance from a new director to build upon tremendous leadership provided by the retiring director after 14 years. Can you think of a more beautiful
area within the continental United States to do this important work? The 36 schools are spread out all over this incredibly bucolic and popular area of the United States. From vast grasslands to majestic mountains, rushing rivers to panoramic landscapes, Colorado is unlike anywhere else. Add to this, skiing and numerous outdoor activities in the world famous Rocky Mountains, beautiful cities and towns and over 300 days of annual sunshine…Wow! Much work remains to be done! This is an organization, well lead and managed but, like most regions within the United States, is experiencing interesting times with expanded educational opportunities in Colorado. This is an Association that works with a very robust and energized accreditation program and provides professional development for Heads of School and their Trustees. ACIS seeks a dynamic leader and manager for this vibrant educational organization. MISSION AND PURPOSE The Association of Colorado Independent Schools accredits, supports, and promotes independent schools in Colorado in a way that respects each school’s mission and fosters excellence in teaching and learning. The Association has 36 member schools that provide a wide variety of missions; boarding, day, progressive, traditional, Montessori, and Waldorf. The schools are geographically diverse, half (18) are located throughout greater Denver, eight are located in mountain communities, and ten are located in the Front Range cities of Boulder, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

1963-1978: First Accreditations 1989:
Annual Trustee and Head of School Conference established.
1991:
Colorado gave full recognition and authority to ACIS as a separate accrediting agency.
2007:
ACIS celebrated its 50th Anniversary

The Common School Association of Colorado Independent Schools the next ACIS strategic plan. These efforts should include refining the focus and purpose of the wide variety of initiatives that ACIS has undertaken, plus defining future priorities. In short, the Executive Director will contribute to articulating and integrating the organization’s priorities into a powerful future roadmap to allow the organization to excel. •
The next Executive Director for ACIS will be a thought leader in education, drive financial sustainability for a small organization, and build the brand throughout the entire state of Colorado for the 36-member schools.

A survey was conducted soliciting input from all 36 Heads of School. The top five skills that clearly rose to the top of the priorities for the next ACIS Executive Director include the following:
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
1. Strategic vision and advocacy
The overall growth and improved reputation of ACIS within the last ten years has been remarkable. Strong leadership from the retiring Executive Director is evidenced throughout the entire operation of the organization. ACIS stands out among school associations for its cohesiveness, good governance, and effective committee structure, as well as its strong support staff. Nonetheless, as in all organizations, challenges remain and opportunities for further growth and improvement present themselves to the next Executive Director of ACIS: •
Education in Colorado is a hot topic and there are multiple competitors in a very small market place. Independent schools play a very small role in the overall educational landscape of Colorado. The next Executive Director must brand, market, and promote independent schools throughout the entire state of Colorado.

The next Executive Director will work strategically to align the organizations priorities. Importantly, in concert with the organization’s Board, the Executive Director will help shape
