SoccerSpecific.com Session Plan: ss_sivek_Attacking on the break ACTIVITY #1 Set up: Pass and follow warm up - Players are split in to 3 teams and set up as shown in the diagram. Instructions: Players in team A start with the ball and pass the ball to B and follow the pass, player B then passes to player C and follows pass, player C then passes back to Player B and follows pass. Continous practice for 3 minutes. Players to complete 2 sets, 1 minute rest in between sets, players must do keep up's. Coaching Points: Players on 2 touch during first set, emphasis on control and passing with inside, outside, instep etc. Players must follow pass with a quick burst of speed specific to closing down and supporting play during a match.
ACTIVITY #2 Set up: Progression from previous practice. The distance is now doubled to 20m. Instructions: Players to complete 2 more sets, 1 minute rest in between sets, players must do ball mastery skills. Coaching Points: Players on 2 touch during first set, emphasis on control and passing with inside, outside, instep etc. Players must follow pass with a quick burst of speed specific to closing down and supporting play during a match.
ACTIVITY #3 Set up: Players set up as in diagram. 3 teams of 6 + 4 GK's (GK's are optional, use smaller goals) Instructions: 3 v 3 + wall players (Jokers). 3 minute games then alternate teams (6 minutes in play and 3 minutes resting as a wall player. Wall players play with team in possession. Coaching Points: Emphasis on high tempo, closing down, angles and weight of pass.

If a team scores they keep possession and play to score at the other end of the area. In the diagram the red team has moved the ball up the pitch quickly, when player 2 passed the ball to player 3 the player followed the pass to support 3 but also to anticipate a goal, now being in a position to pick up possession from the GK. Coaching Points: Emphasis on high tempo, supporting play and communication. The team not in possession of the football are looking to close down, intercept passes and counter attack at pace.
ACTIVITY #5 Set up: Progression from last activity. 3 teams of 6 + 2 GK's. Large area to encourage fast break attack Instructions: 5 minute games then rotate teams, free play but limit touches if players are getting caught in possession. Coaching Points: Emphasis on high tempo, supporting play and communication, keeping touches down to a minimum. The team not in possession of the football are looking to close down, intercept passes and counter attack at pace.
ACTIVITY #6 Set up: Progression from last activity. Split players in to 2 teams. Adjust size of pitch to accomadate the amount of players in the practice. Use full pitch for 11 v 11. Instructions: 15 minute free play. Coaching Points: Coaching points : fast interceptions and quick counter-attack when possible, immediate pressing of the ball when possesion is lost. Work on combination play and angles to recieve the ball. Cool down and stretches to end session.
