Activity 2 Example Experiments Resource Sheet Step 1: Ask

1. What is the question you want to answer? Write the question, as directed by your teacher, in your Launch Log. Step 2: Predict

2. What is your prediction? Write your prediction in your Launch Log. Step 3: Investigate

Experiment 1 Procedure:

Experiment 2 Procedure:

Step 1 – Place one drop of GlitterBug® Potion on the palm of your hand and rub hands together, making sure to coat all surfaces of both hands with the lotion.

Step 1 – Place one drop of GlitterBug Potion on the palm of your hand and rub hands together, making sure to coat all surfaces of both hands with the lotion.

Step 2 – View hands using a UV light and document what they look like and how much skin is covered by the lotion.

Step 2 – View hands using a UV light and draw what they look like/how much skin is covered by the lotion on the “Before” picture of the hands in the data table.

Step 3 – Wash hands in warm water for 2 minutes, continuously scrubbing with bar soap with medium intensity, making sure to wash all surface areas. Rinse hands. Step 4 – Carefully pat dry both hands using paper towels. Step 5 – View hands using a UV light and document what they look like and how much skin is covered by the lotion in your data table.

Step 3 – Wash hands in warm water for 2 minutes (without any soap), continuously scrubbing with medium intensity, making sure to wash all surface areas. Step 4 – Carefully pat dry both hands using paper towels. Step 5 – View hands using a UV light. Draw what your hands look like/how much skin is covered by the lotion on the “After” picture of the hands in your data table in your Launch Log. Quantify how much lotion is visible on your hands by rating on

a 0-4 rating scale, as outlined below. Record this information in your data table.

Results Rating (0 – 4): 0 = no evidence of lotion under UV light 1 = some small signs of lotion, such as around nails and skin creases 2 = patches of lotion can be readily seen 3 = obvious signs of lotion with some clean areas 4 = complete cover of all skin surfaces with lotion Step 6 – Repeat steps 1 through 5, but this time use bar soap instead of plain water to wash your hands. Step 7 – Repeat all steps again to determine the average rating of the results for washing with soap and washing with no soap. Step 4: Observe

3. Draw the corresponding data table for your example in your Launch Log. 

If you completed example procedure 1, draw “Data Table for Example 1” in your Launch log.

If you completed example procedure 2, draw “Data Table for Example 2” in your Launch Log. Data Table for Experiment 1
