Activity Card: Rock the Word BEST USE
Fun Activity for one person or a whole family.
VALUE OF THE JOURNEY
Reading and connecting with the Bible in a personal way is one of the best things you can do. Discovering a personal life verse and sharing it with others in a fun way will help you connect with the Bible and share a truth from God’s Word with others.
BEFORE THE JOURNEY
Have the following supplies ready: • Small rock • Pen or pencil and paper • Paint, small paintbrush, glue and decorations • Bible • Computer/Internet accessing device (optional)
FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO HAVE A GREAT EXPERIENCE. 1. In order to become the kind of person who reads the Bible faithfully and connects with verses that speak to your life, spend time in the Bible and ask God to show you a verse that you can claim for this season of life. This “Rock the Word” idea is a fun way to engage you in this journey. If you are not sure where to start in searching the Bible for a life verse that speaks to you, we have provided some ideas and resources below to get you started.* 2. Whether you live alone, have a spouse, or have family members at home, you can enjoy this activity. You can do it individually or as a group. You will find a verse of Scripture that speaks to your situation and feels like God’s personal message to your heart and life, and then you will paint that verse on a rock and “hide” your rock in public for someone else to find. You may not find your verse right away. It might be better if you don’t! 3. Spend time in the Bible at least 5 times this week. Before you open your Bible, pray and ask God to give you a life verse that makes you feel like God is speaking one of His truths directly into your heart and into your situation. As you open the Bible and begin reading, write down the reference to every verse that speaks to you in some significant way. 4. After you have compiled a list of potential candidates for your life verse, go back through each one and begin the process of elimination. Rate them according to how much they speak to you. You might know right away which one it is. On the other hand, you might not find your life verse at first. Though all the verses you write down will be helpful to you, keep going until you have that “A-ha” moment. You’ll know when it happens! 5. Once you have found your life verse, it’s time to think about how you are going to decorate your rock. You might want to write the Scripture reference on it. “Philippians 4:13” for example. Or, you might want to include a few key words. “I CAN – Philippians 4:13.” Be creative and have fun with it. Remember, you want it to catch someone else’s eye and make them curious enough to pick up a Bible. 6. After you have found your life verse and created your rock masterpiece, it’s time to venture out in public and find a great spot to display your rock. Maybe along a sidewalk or in a knothole of a tree or somewhere at a park. As you look, pray for the person who will find your rock. Ask God to use the power of His Word on your rock to speak to his or her heart. 7. If you enjoy doing this activity, why stop with one rock? You can Rock the Word as often as you like. Who knows? You might become known as the Rock Evangelist! *Pick up a copy of “Daily Devotional: The Word for You Today” from the Lighthouse display in the foyer of the worship center or at any of the Welcome Centers. Or you can find daily devotionals online at places such as “Focus on the Family” for families; “She Reads Truth” for women; and “Every Man Ministries” for men. If you just want a Bible book suggestion as to where you can start reading in search of a life verse, Brother Perry suggests any of the following: Psalms, Proverbs, John, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, First John.
