SAINT STEPHEN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH DIRECTOR FOR CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES OUR PARISH Founded in 1973, Saint Stephen’s is located in the Cahaba Heights neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama. Our congregation of 1800 parishioners is known for our casual atmosphere, welcoming attitude, and excellence in outreach and Christian formation. Our children are integral to the mission of our parish. The Director for Children’s Ministries will join an active, experienced program staff that includes three clergy, two full-time Youth Ministers, and others. Our clergy are enthusiastically supportive of our children’s program, and our families have great trust and respect for our staff. JOB DESCRIPTION As a part of the parish’s program staff team, the Director for Children’s Ministries will develop and administer Christian formation programs for children—-birth through 6th grade. Our children come from many schools and there are a lot of them, about 200. The Director for Children’s Ministries oversees two part-time staff: The Nursery Director and the Asst. Director for Children Ministries. Our next Director will find a strong foundation on which to dream and create more as we seek to keep our baptismal promises to our children! ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Creating a safe and engaging environment for children to explore their faith
Recruitment, empowering and training of volunteers
Oversight of our Sunday morning Children’s Chapel [2 services]
Planning and management of Sunday morning program
Planning of Wednesday Night program
Planning and oversight of annual Vacation Bible School
Work with staff to create occasional intergenerational events
Communication with children, parents and the parish on a weekly, monthly and semester basis
Participating regularly in Diocesan events
Imagining new ways and formats to “do” Christian formation
Be a resource to parents
Provide resources for baptismal candidates
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
Possesses bachelor’s degree or higher
Possesses related experience in an Episcopal church, camp, or diocesan office
Committed to the Christian faith and the Episcopal Church, and able to articulate and exhibit personal experience of faith within the Episcopal/Anglican tradition
Able and eager to build appropriate relationships with children and adults
Able to plan, implement, and evaluate both long-term and short-term goals
Able to foster collaborative relationships with adult volunteers
Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills
Possesses relevant organizational, administrative, and computer skills
Possesses creativity, energy, and enthusiasm
Able to foster a collaborative style of management with the other staff
