NEW BEGINNINGS: IMMIGRANT WOMEN AND THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE The United States is a nation of immigrants. Successive waves of people from around the world have come to the U.S. to seek economic opportunities, establish homes, and build communities. Policies, both official and unofficial, have played a role in how new immigrants become new Americans. These diverse peoples, arriving across more than two centuries, have faced remarkably similar challenges integrating into American culture and society. Female immigrants, whose native cultures often have very different perspectives on women, have unique challenges and perspectives.

Dr. Donna Gabaccia (University of Toronto, Scarborough) is a scholar of international migration, gender, and food studies. She has written and edited fifteen books on U.S. immigration, migration in world history, and the worldwide Italian diaspora. Gabaccia is currently writing a book on the feminization of international migration.
Diane Portnoy
Diane Portnoy founded The Immigrant Learning Center (Malden, MA) in 1992 to provide free English classes to immigrant and refugee adults. The organization serves more than 900 students each year and educates the public about the positive impact immigrants have on the American communy. Her concern for immigrants and refugees grew out of her own immigrant experience as the daughter of Polish Holocaust survivors.
