family and friends. The last thing you want to worry about is the safety of your festive decorations. Be sure that you’re not overloading electrical outlets with holiday lights and other devices. Too many plugs in one outlet may create enough heat to start a fire. And make sure outdoor outlets have ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection to guard against shocks. Read up on these tips to stay safe around electricity year round: Plugs - Make sure your plugs fit your outlets. Never remove the ground pin (the third prong) to make a three-prong plug fit a two-conductor outlet. Cords - Make sure cords are in tip top shape. If they are frayed or

Holiday lighting is fun and festive but can cause your energy bill to rise. The good news is you don’t have to sacrifice the glow of holiday lights this season to keep costs down. If you use holiday lighting, consider swapping out traditional lights for strings of LEDs. Lightemitting diode (LED) light bulbs use significantly less power than traditional incandescent bulbs. They also give off almost no heat, which reduces fire risk, and are waterproof as well as chip and fade resistant. LED holiday lights use 90 percent less electricity than traditional holiday lights and prices have gone way down in recent years. Switching to LEDs is a great way to get into the holiday spirit and enjoy seasonal lighting without breaking the bank.

ENERGY EFFICIENT GIFT GUIDE! It’s the season for gift giving! If you have someone in your life who seems impossible to shop for, worry not! Here are gift ideas to boost the holiday spirit without bumping up the electric bill. Light up their life When it comes to energy efficient lighting, there are many options that would make a good gift. Emergency plug-in flashlights that activate when the power goes out; solar-powered yard lights, address lights, or stepping stones; lights with motion detectors that only come on when they sense movement in the area; and Tiffany-style Energy Star® rated decorative lamps. You can also find LED keychain lights; flashlights; automotive trouble lights; headlamps for biking or hiking; solar campstyle lanterns with rechargeable batteries as a backup; night lights and even decorative lighting. Bring the heat Portable space heaters make a great gift – but be sure you’re using them efficiently. Close off one room and heat it to a comfortable temperature instead of heating the whole house. This helps cut energy waste while keeping cozy and warm. Plug in fun A great gift for the electronics lover in your life is a smart surge protector strip. These plug-in strips protect electronics from power spikes, but also automatically turn off companion devices when the primary device is not in use. Use them with office equipment, as well as entertainment and gaming systems. Help heat a home If you have a friend or neighbor who might need some assistance in weatherizing their home, volunteer to help! Or show a friend how to program their thermostat to save on the heating bill. Even replacing the furnace filter can be much appreciated. Or you can always give a Clark Public Utilities gift certificate to help pay electric bills. Affordable, safe and practical • Alarm clock with battery back up • Surge suppressor • Outage safety kit • Fire extinguisher • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors • Hand crank flashlight and radio • Energy efficient light bulbs • Clothesline or freestanding clothes rack batteries for small electronics and “batteries-not-included” toys • Battery powered flameless candles
