Adding a hot pad hanging loop

Adding a hot pad hanging loop 1. To create an optional hanging loop, cut a 1½ x 6" strip of fabric - usually the same as your binding. 2. Fold the raw edges of the strip to the center and press. Fold in half, lengthwise, to bring the previous folds together and press. Topstitch along both long sides. 3. Fold the loop in half, crosswise, and crisscross the ends. See the illustration, below. Baste the ends of the loop to a corner on the back side, as shown, 1/8" from the raw edge. 4. Use a 1/4" seam allowance to bind the hot pad/trivet in the usual manner, using 2-1/4” strips cut from your binding fabric. If you attache it like this, the mat can also be used for a trivet with the loop left on the underside, unseen.

Crisscross the ends of the loop and baste them to the back of the hot pad, as shown. The ends will be encased in the binding.
