AN EDUCATION ADMINISTRATOR’S GUIDE TO GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE
What is Give Where You Live? Give Where You Live is a 24‐hour fundraising event created to rally community support for local charitable causes. This unique one‐day fundraiser is being organized by the Kearney Area Community Foundation (KACF) and will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014, from midnight to midnight. Community members are asked to make donations and show support for the local nonprofit organizations that positively impact our lives every day. Nonprofits will be eligible to receive prizes and matching funds during the 24‐hour long fundraising event. KACF brings this event to the Kearney area with several goals in mind: To raise awareness of the current philanthropic needs of our communities To help local nonprofits identify and cultivate new funding streams To inspire donors to increase financial support of their favorite local causes Why participate in Give Where You Live? Is your school fundraising for new playground equipment? Do you need technology upgrades? Give Where You Live can help you raise money for your school! Your school could earn matching funds from the Kearney Area Community Foundation and win prizes! You could also educate the community about your school’s specific needs. More importantly, your donors can give gifts online directly to your cause. This guide will help your team get started! 1) Think about what your fundraiser will look like. Do you need more community awareness about what your school needs? Would you like to target parents or the community for donations to your specific project? Will your school’s PTO be involved in organizing a celebration or collecting donations? Would you like to organize a school‐wide campaign, or leave the planning up to each classroom? 2) Form a team to attack the details. Whether you keep it simple or involve the whole school, your team can’t do it alone! Include your “doers” and ask for volunteers. Decide on a fundraising project and establish reasonable goals. 3) Sign up for Give Where You Live. This step involves a little reading! You can either do this step yourself or hand it off to your campaign leader. Updated on 10/2/2014

Prepare your contact list. Consider who you are trying to reach and why. Use existing communication lines to connect with your potential donors: your school calendar, Facebook page, building marquee, email database, weekly school announcements, etc. Set a budget. The budget will help you determine how much you can spend to reach prospective donors on your mailing list. Determine all items that have costs. You should include absolutely everything you will need. For example: postage, supplies, printing, graphic design, etc. Create your message. Remember your main message: Give December 4! Use the Give Where You Live campaign logo to connect your donors with the giving day. It can be found under “Images” in the Nonprofit Toolkit or by request from
[email protected]. Have an easy‐to‐read statement of your goal and tell them how their contribution will make a difference! Include a call to action. State your needs clearly and tell your donors what you need them to do. Are you looking for clothing donations? Monetary gifts? Volunteers? Tell your donors how to donate on December 4. Do you want them to go online, or are you collecting donations at your school? Be sure to include your giving day Razoo web address or direct them to the campaign website: http://GiveWhereYouLive.Razoo.com. If you are not collecting donations at your school, make sure they know they can also make donations by stopping by the Kearney Area Community Foundation office from 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on December 4. Tell real stories or include facts or statistics; consider including a compelling graphic or photograph to grab attention and to help tell your story. Determine a timeline.
