Advanced SMSF Training Day August / September 2017 8.30am – 9.00am

Registration

9.00am – 10.45am

Session 1: Estate planning beyond 1 July 2017 Understandably, most of the focus in recent months has been on “30 June critical” activity – setting up for the new pension regime and making last minute contributions. But for the future it is clear that the most significant changes to superannuation in 10 years will have a lasting impact on estate planning. What new strategies become appropriate in a world where many couples can no longer rely on leaving their super intact until they have both died? How does this affect decisions about reversionary v non-reversionary pensions? Binding death benefit nominations? Management of capital gains tax? Since transition to retirement pensions will now be very different to “retirement phase” pensions, should the estate planning decisions for these income streams be different? We will use a number of case studies to explore these questions and more as we work through the estate planning strategies of the future.

10.45am – 11.15am

Morning Tea

11.15am – 1.00pm

Session 2: CGT relief – tips, myths and strategies If there is one aspect of the 2017 reforms that has most practitioners scratching their heads it is the CGT relief. This session is vital for all SMSF practitioners to make sure SMSF trustees receive the very best outcome. We will recap the rules but more importantly help with the practical implementation – what must be done to optimise the relief? What simple errors could rule it out? Who should take it up and who shouldn’t? Where do capital losses from prior years fit in and how can you ensure they are kept in place for future years to minimise tax, rather than inadvertently used during 2016/17 for no benefit? What rules of thumb can be used to make the right decisions about the relief? Will there be cases where two clients who look identical on paper should make different decisions because their plans for the future are different?

1.00pm – 2.00pm

Lunch

2.00pm – 3.15pm

Session 3: Strategies post 1 July 2017 It’s not just estate planning that requires a fresh approach from 1 July 2017. There is new thinking to apply for recontributions, when pensions should start (or not), optimising a fund’s income tax exemptions and much more. What opportunities are presented by the latest draft legislation on contributions for over 65s who are downsizing their homes?

3.15pm – 3.45pm

Afternoon Tea

3.45pm – 5.00pm

Session 4:

In the trenches

Another year, another batch of cases... Let us share some of our learnings with you from a few of the real cases we’ve encountered in the last 12 months. Was there a problem? If not, why not? If so, what was it and how did we resolve it? What would we do differently next time?
