President's Message Mason Myers

SPE Members, Well the calendar says that it is officially fall and it’s hard to believe that October is here already. Last month, Patrick Gannon and Russ Wolff from Rapid Prototype and Manufacturing stopped by and reviewed some very exciting new developments in the field of 3D prototype parts. They brought along an entire car load of various prototypes ranging from tiny electrical connectors to cavity/core blocks. Earlier this year at the SPE golf outing, several members asked me about having a meeting topic that focused around hot runners. This month we have invited Denny Vasbinder from INCOE Hot Runners to come and talk about recent developments in hot runner technology and how to review hot runner performance during start up. Also included in the upcoming events is our November SPE Board of Directors meeting which will be held at the Erie County Technical School. Please feel free to join us if you are interested in becoming more involved in the SPE organization.

Hello SPE Members,

PENN STATE student CHAPTER

The fall career fair is now over, and many students are excited for the internship, co-op, or full time positions that they are now being considered for. This year the career fair had a record breaking amount of companies, 150 in all. This number could have actually been higher, but due to space limitations there were some companies turned away. My classmates and I are all happy for the impressive turnout, because it is a positive sign among all of the negative ones about the economy. Traveling seems to be a theme for the month of October. A few students have been to Chicago already for a conference, and a few more are scheduled to attend some later this month. Furthermore, the class trip will be taking place this month. All of the anticipation for the trip is finally going to come to an end. I am confident that the stories from this trip will get all of the current juniors excited for the trip their class will be taking, and the waiting will begin for them. Best Regards, Bradley Koren (Class of 2012 President)

NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER SOCIETY OF PLASTICS ENGINEERS Board of Directors Meeting Minutes The NWPA SPE Board of Directors Meeting was held on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at ECTS. The meeting was called to order at 5.36 p.m. with seven members present: Lynzie Collard, Lucy Lenhardt, Jon Meckley, Mason Myers, Denny Sanders, Jason Williams, Brian Young. Officer Reports 1) Secretary’s Report – there are no previous minutes to submit. 2) Treasurer’s Report – The golf outing was very successful this year. Don did a great job chasing down sponsors. Expenses were about $9000, income was about $18000 with a net gain of $9000. Next year the outing will be August 13, and we can discuss where – do we want to stay at Culbertson? PLASTCAR is coming up on December 13. Jon has requested funding again for the event. We are considering purchasing the T-shirts for the event and having the SPE logo added to them. After some discussion the item was tabled until next BOD meeting. Committee Reports 3) Newsletter Report – This will be the first all electronic emailing of the newsletter. We need to verify advertisers and also work on expanding that. Classified ads are also available. RNS will print at least 20 copies to be available at the meetings in case anyone prefers the paper copy and also for archivals. The price quote for layout and 20 is approximately $450/month. We need to make arrangements to pick up the newsletters every month. The newsletter will be posted to the SPE section website through 4spe.org. Dennis suggested possibly sending extra copies of the newsletters to past members or companies. 4) Council Report – The next Council meeting is November 12, 2011 in Barcelona. Brian will attend via remote access. 5) Membership Report – Brian Young is the new membership chair. Lynzie will send the email list to him this week for sending the newsletter out.

6.) Program Report – September is Rapid Prototyping with Thogus at the QS & Lube. Lucy will send the projector in case there are tv issues. October 20 meeting is Incoe talking about hot runners at the Siebenbeurger Club. November meeting is at Syd’s Place with TPStek and the December meeting is tentatively at Ricardo’s on December 9, 2011. This is a Friday as many board members have a conflict on the regular Thursday schedule. Mason suggested moving up the meeting time to 5.30 for the social and 6.00pm for the dinner, then speaker to follow. Consensus agreed and meeting time was moved.   7) Advertising Report – Sponsorship for the golf outing was great, see Treasurer’s report for details.   8) Publicity Report – Trevor will have a notice for the meeting put in the Thursday Showcase of the Erie Times News. He will also take photos at the meeting.   9) Education Report – 10) Special Events Report – see Treasurer’s golf report 11) Awards Chair – Shelly will arrange for the past president award with Championship Awards. This can be awarded to Rob at a future meeting. Dennis has 2 speaker plaques left and will order 10 more. 12) Student Chapter Liaison (student) – no report 13) Old Business – none 14) New Business – Lucy submitted the 2011-2012 NWPA SPE Penn State Scholarship application for review. Jon motioned to adjourn, motion seconded by Jason. Meeting adjourned at 6.42pm. Respectfully submitted, Lucy Lenhardt, SPE Secretary 2011-2012
