African Spirit Quilt This quilt is an excellent way to combine beautiful fabrics using an easily pieced block. It doesn’t matter whether you use a single fabric for the large squares or lots of different fabrics. The finished quilt as shown here is approximately 48” x 60”.

Instructions

Supplies ØØ 1 yd. of Fabric A or any combination of twelve 9 1/2” x 9 1/2” squares (for largest square in block)

ØØ 1/2 yd. of Fabric B (one of the two rectangular accents in block)

ØØ 1/2 yd. of Fabric C (the other of the two rectangular accents in block)

ØØ 1/3 yd. Fabric D (smallest square in block)

ØØ 1 1/2 yds. Outer Border fabric, 1/2 yd. Binding fabric, 3 yds. Backing fabric

Strip set from #1

1. Cut three 9 1/2” strips from Fabric A and cut them into twelve 9 1/2” squares. Cut one 9 1/2” strip and one 3 1/2” strip from Fabric B and cut them into twelve 3 1/2” x 9 1/2” rectangles. Sew a Fabric A & B together into strip sets as shown in the figure below. Press seam toward the Fabric B. 2. Cut one 9 1/2” strip and one 3 1/2” strip from Fabric C and cut them into twelve 3 1/2” x 9 1/2” rectangles. Cut one 3 1/2” strips from Fabric D. Sew a Fabric C & D together into strip sets as shown in the figure below. Press seam toward the Fabric C. 3. Sew the strips from #1 and #2 together to make the block. Make a total of 12 blocks. 4. Arrange the blocks in a 3 x 4 layout or as you prefer. You can lay out all of the blocks in one direction (as in the pictured quilt) or turn the blocks in different directions to get an entirely different look. 5. Sew the blocks into rows. Sew the rows together. Be sure to press seams carefully.

6. Cut four 6 1/2” wide LOF (Length of Fabric) strips of Outer Border fabric. Apply outer borders. 7. Quilt as desired.

8. Cut six 2 1/2” strips of Binding fabric. Bind as preferred.

To make this quilt using the African Spirit collection from Elizabeth’s Studio Fabrics, you will need the following amounts of each SKU number: Fabric A (1/3 yd. each): 1 strip @ 9 ½” , sub 9 ½” 2 blocks - m314-black. (flowers) 2 blocks - m314-orange (flowers) 2 blocks - m314-blue (flowers) 1 block - m315-blue (faces) 1 block - m315-black (faces) 1 block - m315-deep-red (faces) 1 block - m317-black (faces in squares) 1 block - m317-blue (faces in squares) 1 block - m317-deep-red (faces in squares) Fabric B (Blue - m318-blue 1/2 yd.): 1 strip @ 9 ½”, sub 3 ½ (11) 1 strip @ 3 ½”, sub 9 ½ (1) Fabric C (Orange - m318-deep-red 1/2 yd.): 1 strip @ 9 ½”, sub 3 ½ (11) 1 strip @ 3 ½”, sub 9 ½ (1) Fabric D (Black - m318-black 1/3 yd.): 1 strip @ 3 ½”, sub 3 ½” (12) Wide Outer Border (m316-orange): 4 strips @ 6 1/2” (LOF) = 1 1/2 yds. Binding (m316-orange): 6 strips @ 2 1/2” = 1/2 yd. (may be able to get this from the leftover outer border fabric) Backing: 3 yds.
