2012 Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) Series: Preparing and Accessing Student Use Materials Providing students with multiple means of accessing the curriculum in all subject areas requires knowledge of how materials can be prepared to ensure multiple means of representation. This webinar series explores methods for locally producing accessible instructional materials. The emphasis is on the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
2012 AIM Series: What Are Digital Materials? Thursday, January 12, 2012 (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) A key feature of providing Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) is the provision of digital materials. What are digital materials? Digital materials are a variety of formats which provide either access or barriers to the students who need access to curricular information. This two-hour webinar will provide an overview of the different types of digital formats which exist and how they can be used by students in need of AIM. There are a number of low-cost or free tools which allow school staff to produce accessible digital materials from different formats. Matching digital formats to the tools available as well as computer platforms will also be discussed.
2012 AIM Series: Preparing and Reading Accessible PDFs Thursday, January 26, 2012 (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Portable Document Format (PDFs) can provide lowcost, effective digital materials to students in need of AIM. This webinar will provide participants with information on how to produce accessible PDFs on a variety of computer platforms. Annotations will include utilizing text-to-speech, enlargement, and the addition of editable fields. This session will also cover the use of Adobe Reader X and the use of Read Out Loud as methods of access.
2012 AIM Series: Tablets and Other Portable Reading Devices Thursday, February 9, 2012 (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Tablet-based devices such as the Apple iPad and Microsoft Tablet are providing students with effective portable ways to access accessible instructional materials (AIM). Other portable devices can also provide students with a variety of ways to access digital materials in
both visual and auditory formats. This webinar will provide participants with an overview of the devices and software available to access AIM. Some of the formats covered will be text, PDF, Word (.doc), and Daisy. Other portable devices which specialize in reading Daisy-based materials and other formats will be presented. Information regarding expansion of tablet-based technology will also be discussed.
2012 AIM Series: Scanning and OCR Thursday, February 23, 2012 (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Scanning and optical character recognition (OCR) can be effective methods for locally producing accessible instructional materials (AIM). This webinar provides participants with a survey of the various hardware and software options available to produce accessible materials through scanning and OCR. A variety of platforms and scanning methods will be investigated, from flatbed scanners to handheld devices, which can provide rapid text-to-speech options.
2012 AIM Series: Accessing and Producing STEM Materials Thursday, March 8, 2012 (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Given the often graphical nature of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) materials produced, it is particularly important for teachers to understand and provide ways which allow students to access these materials in formats which take into account the concept of universal design for learning (UDL). The goal of this webinar is to provide teachers with information related to using multiple forms of expression, both high-tech and low-tech, to provide access to STEM. Visual, auditory, and tactile methods will be discussed.
2012 AIM Series: Interpreting Graphical Information with Emphasis on Tactile/Audio Representation Thursday, March 22, 2012 (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Essential to the goal of developing accessible instructional materials (AIM) is determining methods of producing graphical information that are accessible to all students. While many materials are presented in a format which can be easily converted to digital text, graphical information provides special challenges and tools. The goal of this webinar is to highlight methods of providing students with the graphical tools necessary to interpret information from sources other than text.
