SWA offered landscape- and open-space master planning, as well as public-realm design, for this 1,400 hectare subcenter in the city of Riyadh. The project includes a variety of open-space systems and pedestrian-oriented streetscapes that called for shadesensitive design strategies and water features that create a network of comfortable, shaded, human-scale spaces. Rushing water can be a major hazard for desert communities; by moving water into a series of small, calm detention ponds, storm water gently spills from one basin to the next, minimizing rushing water hazards. A series of conservation efforts were also applied, including the manipulation of microclimates, innovative grading techniques, and a water-conserving selection of plant materials. Irrigation demand is balanced with grey water production so that potable water is not required to maintain gardens and parks. SWA Group: www.swagroup.com
