ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE TABBED GSC PRESEASON COACHES FAVORITE

Birmingham, Ala. – Alabama Huntsville was selected by the GSC coaches to once again hoist the GSC Tournament crown in 201516 as the Chargers will enter as the favorite, announced on Friday.

Claiming 95-total points (nine first-place votes and one second-place votes) was Alabama Huntsville. The Chargers will enter as the 2015-16 Preseason Coaches Selection to win it all. West Georgia, who lost leading-scorer Deonta Stocks, was picked second (78 points). Rounding out the Top 3 was Union, with 76 points. Coming in at No. 4 was Delta State, followed by West Alabama (64), Christian Brothers (52), North Alabama (41), Lee (35), Valdosta State (33), Shorter (32) and West Florida, with 26. The GSC advanced advanced four teams to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, UAH, UWA, UWG and, in its first season of NCAA DII eligibility, UU. The UWG Wolves were the lone GSC squad to make it to the second round, but fell to Florida Southern, 81-84. The Preseason All-GSC Team saw DSU’s Devin Schmidt as the only unanimous selection. Both UU’s Marterrace Brock and UAH’s Seab Webster received nine votes each, while Preston Herring (UAH) had seven. The list of honorees rounded out with three players receiving four votes each, DSU’s Jack Madgen and PJ Davis and UU’s Ashanti Day.

WELCOME TO THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The Gulf South Conference officially inducted Lee University (Tenn.) as an official member for the upcoming basketball season. Next up on the slate of incoming institutions is Mississippi College, with sights set on fall of 2016-17. MC will compete toward league schedules, however will not be eligible for the postseason or awards.

GSC COACHING CHANGES/HONORS West Florida introduced Jeff Burkhamer as its new head men’s basketball coach. He replaces Bob Stinnett, who retired. Burkhamer will serve as the fourth head coach in the last 31 years at UWF. He comes to the Argos via Lander with over 31 years of coaching experience. Christian Brothers Head Coach Mike Nienaber was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame this offseason. He has spent his entire career in West Tennessee, playing at La Salle High School and coaching for 16 years at Bethel College and, currently, 16 years with CBU. 2015-16 GSC PRESEASON MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM Three seniors highlight the seven-member 2015-16 Preseason All-GSC Team, Delta State’s Jack Madgen, Alabama Huntsville’s Preston Herring and Union’s Marterrace Brock. Madgen, currently ranks fourth all-time on the DSU three-pointers list. Herring averaged 12 points-per-game and 7.7 rebounds-per-game, while Brock had 17.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg. Also making the team for DSU were Devin Schmidt and PJ Davis. Schmidt, a GSC First-Teamer from a year ago, was second in the league in scoring (21.1 ppg) and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau as a sophomore, while Davis, the only undergrad on the team, was the 2014-15 GSC Freshman of the Year. He recorded seven double-doubles. Rounding out the list of honorees were UU’s Ashanti Day and UAH’s Seab Webster. Day averaged just over 10 a game and competed in the Athletes in Action New Zealand Tour this offseason. Webster, the 2014-15 GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, averaged 15.1 ppg. He also dropped a season-high 33 on Union (1/10).
