Alaskan drilling: Small area, big potential
Alaska ANWR
The CANADA Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, UNITED or ANWR, STATES encompasses some 19 million acres of Alaska’s North Slope. New drilling for oil and gas would be limited to 2,000 of the 1.5 million acres set aside in 1980 by Congress and President Carter for potential energy exploration. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates this otherwise barren acreage could yield a million barrels of oil a day — 20 percent of current domestic production.
