2015 ASU Football: Game 1 vs Valdosta State Albany State will kick off its 2015 season when it faces an old state rival. The Golden Rams will host the Valdosta State Blazers at Albany State University Coliseum at 7 p.m. This will be the 17 meeting between the two programs. The Blazers hold a 15-1 series edge. The Golden Rams lost to VSU 38-10 in the season opener of the 2014 season. Albany State returns a bevy of veteran players on both offense and defense. The Gold Rush Offense will be led by junior running back, Jarvis Small, who had a breakout season during his sophomore campaign. Small rushed for 1.169 yards and 13 touchdowns, and garnered the 2014 SIAC Offensive Player of the Year Award. All-conference offensive lineman Javoris Wilburn also returns, along with fellow starting lineman Tedrick Coffield and Kenneth Averhart. Junior Caleb Edmonds will take over the reigns at the quarterback position. Top wide receivers Devonta Osborne and Quadrey Simmons are also back. The Golden Rams also return their two kickers in Zachary Gayden-Holley and Stefan Whitehead. On defense, All-SIAC linebacker Tavarius Washington will lead the perennially sound ASU defense. He led the team in total tackles with 93 and was also named to the Daktronics Super Region Two Defensive Team. Returning starters Grover Stewart and Ricky Blackmon will anchor the Golden Rams’ defensive line. Defensive backs Nick Scott, Cedric Ashe and Ryan Selby return to the ASU secondary. THE HEAD COACHES Dan Land is no stranger to ASU athletics, as he enters his first year as the Interim Head Football coach. Overall, Land is entering his 15th season as a Golden Rams coach. Land joined the ASU Golden Rams football squad as a running back in 1983 and enjoyed a stellar football career. Land earned honors in high school, collegiate and professional athletics. In 1984, he was part of the first S.I.A.C Football Championship team at Albany State College. Land's interest in football sparked when he joined the 1979 Seminole County High School Indians football team, where he was a four-year letterman and all-star running and defensive back. As an Albany State Golden Ram, Land was a two-time All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) team member. He led the Rams in rushing as a junior with 1,299 yards and 1,396 yards as a senior. He also led the team and the SIAC in rushing Dan Land touchdowns. Albany State His collegiate success led him to the National Football League (NFL). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted him as a running back in 1987, and he later played with the Oakland Raiders as a defensive back. Land, who earned his graduate and undergraduate degrees from ASU, served as director of athletics at Albany State from November 1998 until June 2001. Land is also an instructor in ASU's Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. In 2005, Land was inducted into the Albany State University’s Sports Hall of Fame. He is also a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Albany, Ga. where he serves as a member of the Deacon Board. Land and his wife, former ASU cheerleader Theresa Spurlin, are the parents of two daughters, Dannisha and Mimeaux, and one son Dan Land, Jr. and a grandson named Lathan. Dannisha is also an ASU graduate. His daughter Mimeaux attends Clemson University where she is a member of the Lady Tigers' track & field team. Dan Land, Jr. is a sophomore at Westover Comprehensive High School where he also plays on the Patriots football team.

David Dean Valdosta State

Entering his ninth season as the Valdosta State head coach, David Dean has proven his name belongs among the top in the nation when discussing the best coaches in the NCAA Division II’s ranks. After all, Dean has twice led his team to the pinnacle of the NCAA Division II football world as his squad won national championships in both 2007 and 2012. Additionally, he has led his squad to two more appearances in the NCAA Playoffs and tallied a career record of 70 wins against just 24 losses, a winning percentage of .744. Twice Dean has been named the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year, having accomplished the feat in both 2007 and 2012 and received the organization’s Super Region II Coach of the Year honor in 2010. The individual accolades have not been reserved just for Dean during his tenure, as he has had a player receive AllAmerica recognition on 21 occasions while a Blazer has been named All-Gulf South Conference 59 times under his tutelage. Additionally, 10 Valdosta State Blazers that have played for Dean have gone on to the NFL.
