LADY BRAVES NOTES • Alcorn went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc in the opening half of its 70-53 upending of Jackson State. Junior Alexus Freeman led all scorers with 18 points. She has a team-high 14.5 points per game in conference play. • Juniors Tia Sanders (12) and Miracle Rushing (11) and freshman Aysha Kirkland (10) joined Freeman in double figures. Kirkland’s 10 marked a career high. • Senior Henrietta Wells secured her 10th multipleblock contest of the season with four against the Lady Tigers. She leads the SWAC and ranks 15th in Division I with 2.8 blocks per contest.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI VALLEY • MVSU (7-6, 1-2 SWAC) dropped a 79-73 contest to preseason favorite Alabama State in overtime. Devilettes guard Christina Reed recorded the SWAC’s first 30-point game this season in the loss. MVSU won its first two conference games, first at Arkansas-Pine Bluff before coming home to top Alabama A&M. • Reed ranks second in league play with 22.0 points per game. Reed has also contributed 7.3 rebounds per contest along with Ashley Beals’ 9.0 which ranks second in the SWAC.

• Reed and Lauren Elliot are in a three-way tie atop the conference with 3.0 steals per game, a big reason the Dev• The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to De- ilettes front the league with 13.3 steals per game. jah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year’s squad. She has a team-high 31 threepointers this season, shooting .290 from beyond the arc. • The Lady Braves bested MVSU in all three matchups last season including a 62-43 victory in the first orund of the SWAC tournament. • The number 70 has a significant impact on Alcorn’s W-L record. The Lady Braves are 8-1 in league play when scoring 70-plus points and 1-5 when allowing 70plus dating back to last season. • The top four scorers for the Lady Braves, Tia Sanders (174), Alexus Freeman (126), Brianna Luton (107) and Henrietta Wells (100) have accounted for approximately 62 percent of the team’s total scoring this season. • A key for the Lady Braves in conference games has been to improve their free throw shooting. Oddly enough, their two wins came when shooting less than 60 percent while shooting over that mark in the two losses.

COURTNEY PRUITT

Head Coach (Second Season) • 13-32 Overall, 10-12 SWAC Courtney Garrett Pruitt enters her second season as the third leader in school history to lead the Alcorn State women’s basketball program. In her first season at the helm, Pruitt led the Lady Braves to the second round of the SWAC tournament for the first time since the 2011-12 season and put her team in a prime position to beat the second-seeded Southern Lady Jaguars. The Lady Jags used a 21-8 fourth-quarter run to ultimately edge Alcorn 61-57. Under Pruitt’s tutelage, Norianna Haynes was named the 2015-16 SWAC Player of the Year. Haynes finished the regular season leading the SWAC in scoring with 568 points – 20.3 per game. She also topped the conference in double-doubles (12), as well as defensive rebounds (6.6 per game). Following Haynes’ stellar season, she signed to play professionally with Portugal’s Clube Desportivo Torres Novas. From 2011– 2015 she was the head coach at Wiley College where she led the Lady Wildcats to 3 NAIA National Tournament Appearances, 1 Final Four Appearance, 2 Red River Athletic Conference Titles, and 1 Tournament title. She also coached 3 AllAmericans, received 2 back to back coach of the year awards in 2012 – 2013 & 2013- 2014 season. In her last three seasons Coach Pruitt has been ranked in the NAIA Top 25 National poll with her highest ranking being held at # 6 in the Nation.

In 2014 she was also the recipient of the NAACP Coach Clifford E. Stewart sportsmanship award, for her leadership in sports and education. In her coaching career she has won over 100 games and is one of the youngest and fastest coaches to reach 100 career wins. Not only has Coach Pruitt led her team on the court but also off as she holds a 90% graduation rate for her student-athletes. In 2008-2010 during her years at Ranger College, she produced three conference players with an outstanding record marking the history books for the school accomplishments in women’s basketball. In 2010-2011, Pruitt continued her coaching career as she was named the assistant coach at Tyler Junior College. She helped lead the team to a 23-8 record as they produced one AllAmerican and three all-conference players. Pruitt began her coaching career at Lon Morris College in 2005. During her tenure, she assisted the team to the Region 14 conference semi-finals. After three years of coaching at Lon Morris, she continued her professional growth and became the head coach at Ranger College for two years. Coach Pruitt earned her Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry from Lon Morris College in 2003. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Management from Newberry College in 2005. Coach Pruitt later earned her Masters of Education in Kinesiology/Health Science from Stephen F. Austin in 2008. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. Alcorn (2-13, 2-2 SWAC) converted the long-distance shots at an impressive 58.3 percent (7-12), its highest mark of the season. The Lady Braves knocked down 6-for-9 three balls in the first half. The seven total threes marked the most since Alcorn drained 10 against Central Arkansas on Nov. 17. Junior Alexus Freeman led all scorers with 18 points including a career-high 10 from the charity stripe. Fellow juniors Tia Sanders (12) and Miracle Rushing (11) and freshman Aysha Kirkland (10) joined her in double figures. Kirkland’s 10 also served as a new career high. Senior Henrietta Wells added four blocks in her 10th multiple-block performance of the season. The Lady Braves outscored the Lady Tigers (7-7, 1-3 SWAC) 28-13 in the opening quarter. After JSU converted a layup early in the first, Alcorn scored 14 straight, capped by a Kirkland trey and two free throws, which gave the Lady Braves a 19-4 advantage midway through the first. Alcorn was outscored by three in the second and five in the third before closing out the game on an 18-8 advantage in the fourth. A Derica Wiggins layup cut the Lady Braves deficit to three at 54-51 with 8:22 left to play. Freeman then hit a jumper which sparked a 15-0 Alcorn run. The Navasota, Texas, native scored nine during the scoring barrage as the Lady Braves then cruised to victory.

Alcorn State University

Women’s Basketball ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn. Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presbyterians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its establishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components. Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the threeyear graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, including laundry, cost about $5 a month. In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres. In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource

allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified University. The student population is now representative of more than 65 counties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University provides an undergraduate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions. As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic backgrounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University operates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, including the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees. The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State University’s 19th president. President Rankins' background and vision are strategically aligned with Alcorn’s history and tradition. He is poised to expeditiously move Alcorn State University to the next level of excellence.
