Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits

Costume Information

• Generally, we are looking for a colourful effect (rather than historical accuracy) and we are hoping to theme certain characters around a central colour theme. So, for instance, it would be great if all of the Bongo Bandits could wear the same colours. For example – Black Harem Pants, red and black stripy tops, a black sash, a waistcoat and a fez. More detail to follow on that.

Grand Vizier • As he is our main baddie I am imagining a black costume with a large cloak and black head dress or turban. Not too dissimilar to Jafaf from Aladdin.

Alek / Azam • These are our magical story tellers. Ideally their costumes will be identical. Perhaps a turban or headdress and harem pants. Perhaps they could be predominantly red or silver or a mixture of both.

Sultan • The Sultan’s costume will be ideally white and gold – to denote his power and wealth. White Harem pants, a gold sash perhaps and elaborate turban or head-dress would be perfect!

Princess Satsuma • Perhaps all in gold with harem pants and thin glittering material as a head scarf or veil.

Flossy Baba • Needs to be in Harem pants but in contrasting colours to the rest of the traders and the bandits. This will help to set her apart:

Ali Baba • Red Fez is crucial – white harem pants and waistcoat (red or blue), white shirt/blouse perhaps? Or another colour scheme if you prefer.

Genie

Betty Bongo • As leader of the bandits she needs to stand out from her gang but ideally themed around the same colour scheme – black, white and red stripes? Eg. Black and red striped harem pants, black top, red sash and red fez or headdress?

Dusty and Sandy • Our comedy duo need identical costumes but in contrasting (bright colours). Stripes could work well – or bold plain colours. I was thinking of harem pants, shirt, sash and waistcoat – perhaps a fez each too.

Bongo Bandits – the bongo bandits would ideally have identical costumes themed around the colour of white, black and red stripes. Sashes, harem pants and black fezes would be ideal.

Guards The Guards could to be dressed in dark attire – possibly grey or black with perhaps a hint of gold to suggest their royal station. Identically they would be matching costumes. Suggestion Harem pants, sash and headress – black, green and gold colour scheme.

Handmaidens • Harem Pants and silky top with some sort of silky scarf or head-dress would be ideal. Jewellery to match perhaps. Semolina and Tapioca could wear the same but not essential.

Traders • Either go for a traditional Arabian trader look as detailed below or if it is simpler all traders could be themed with black t shirts, white or cream harem pants – a sash for the midriff and a waistcoat.

Sheiks – rayban style sunglasses would be a cool addition to the traditional sheik outfit
