The Church teaches that there are people in Heaven. People who are called Saints.

All who die in God’s grace, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven (CCC 1030).

“But nothing unclean shall enter [heaven]” (Rev. 21:27)

Your soul is in purgatory for as long as it needs to become pure enough for heaven. It is a place that can be hard to be in but a place of hope.

Imagine a REALLY hot bath. Climbing in will be painful at first. It takes time to get used to the temperature. In time it becomes easier to be in the bath. This is a little like purgatory. Very hard at the start of the journey but with time, hope and prayer the journey becomes easier as you become purified.
