As part o f many on-going services, the club launched a new Sport C lim bing C om m ittee, w hich initiated or sanctioned three events. These included the Second C anadian N ational C ham pionships, hosted by the Edm onton Section on its new wall in Decem ber. Both the O ttaw a and W innipeg Sections also held their own sport clim bing com petitions. The A .C .C . aw arded the first grants from the A lpine C lub Endow m ent Fund, with am ounts totaling nearly $10,000 disbursed to seven individuals or Sections, including $5,000 to the Sm oke Bluffs project. The Canadian C entre for M ountaineering has launched a m ajor corporate fund-raising drive with the donation o f $100 ,0 0 0 to the project by C anadian Pacific Ltd. The Education C om m ittee hosted the 1989 M ountain L eadership C onference, which was chaired by M ichael M ortim er and drew over 300 participants in N ovember. The budget process was more difficult than usual as the club struggles to deal with rising costs in many areas, particularly publications. A fter serious and significant budget cuts, the Board was able to restrict a proposed m em bership fee increase o f 30% to ju st 11%. This was the first increase since 1987 and raises the individual m em bership fee to $45. M ost o f the additional revenue will go to offset increased publication costs for the C anadian A lpine Jo u rn a l, but there will also be reductions in the appearance and form o f the club's national newsletter.
