ALUMNI GAME On a brisk Saturday afternoon the St. Lawrence University Women’s Soccer Team hosted their Alumni on Sandy McAllister field during the annual Soccer Alumni Weekend. The Alumni were stacked with former All-Conference and Regional All-American players who proved to be a handful for the current squad. Since 2009 this was one of the largest alumni groups represented by Nicky Hynes '11, Katherine Polido '12, Elena Rogers '12, Alex Troli '13, Emily Marvin '13, Erika Gobeille'14, Liz Laprade '14, Corinne Werner'14, Holly Wark '15, Laura Topf '15, Mackenzie Collins '15, Nyssa LaClair '15, Elena Dauphinais'15 and Lexi Weatherbie '15. The game started with a strong tempo as each team gained possession to generate dangerous opportunities. Attacking midfielders Laura Moore '18 and Rachel Muskin '18 took early outside shots but were denied by goalkeeper Hynes. The first chance for the Alumni came from a combination between LaClair and Collins however the play was broken up by a solid back line of Sam Taillon'18, Emma Fleming'16, Amy Reunert '17, and Kate Daley'16. At the 20 minute mark, Reunert started the attack with a precise clearance to the middle of the field where Katie Stames '18 found an opportunity to turn and slip a ball to a racing Kaleigh White ’18 who then found space behind the back line and creating a breakaway situation with the keeper. White then placed a precise shot past Hynes to take a 1 goal lead. In the second half the alumni group began to press and take more chances. With outstanding support on the sidelines by Marvin, Rogers, Wark and Werner, the back line which was lead by central back Polido, continued to push the outside backs of Laprade and Topf who serve dangerous balls into the attacking box just falling short of LaClair and Collins. Much of the returners attack came from strong ball movement between the midfield of Lindsay Geier '17, Muskin and Moore. Geier certainly showed her athleticism by winning several balls in the air. On the other end, Topf shook off a driven service to the face and once again thwarted the returners attack. The alumni midfield of Gobeille, Dauphinais and Troli kept the returners on their toes with a strong attack and combination play but once again the returners struck with a through ball to White who buried a low driven service across the 6 yard box into the back of the net. In the closing minutes, Stames received a ball from Kelly Mahoney’18 at midfield and placed a 1 touch pass to Hannah Merriam ’18 who served a deep ball behind the alumni back line to find White who completed her had trick. "This was certainly an exciting game to watch" said Coach Bari ’98, M ’10, "the Alumni came back prepared and energized. The returners moved the ball well, created great opportunities and did really good things. This is a special weekend for the program and what was most impressive was the relationships built on Sandy. My hope is that we can attract alumni from the '80's , 90's and 00's so that we can share this special occasion with all of our alum. Nonetheless, It was truly a great day to be a saint!" While the score certainly did not reflect the back and fourth play, both teams were extremely competitive and played an entertaining game.
