Dear Alumnus,
Upcoming Events
Students have returned from spring break, and spring session is back in full swing. This is one of our busiest times of the year, filled with academic events and celebrations.
April 2012
Alumni News Every year at this time, CHSS recognizes a distinguished alumnus of the college based upon professional accomplishments, service and contributions to Mason, philanthropic activities, and enhancement of alumni and community engagement at Mason. We would like to congratulate Tyler Cowen, BA Economics '83, the 2012 CHSS Distinguished Alumnus. Dr. Cowen is the Holbert C. Harris Chair of Economics at George Mason University and the general director of the Mercatus Center. He earned his BA in economics from Mason in 1983 and his PhD from Harvard University in 1987. A dedicated writer and translator of economic ideas who often delves into the economics of culture, Dr. Cowen has published dozens of books, reviews, and articles. His newest book, An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies, will be released on April 12. Dr. Cowen also regularly writes his popular blogs, Tyler Cowen's Ethnic Dining Guide and Marginal Revolution. Read more about Tyler Cowen. I’d like to also congratulate Emily L. Chamlee-Wright, BA Economics '88, MA '90, PhD '93, for her recent promotion as the new dean and provost of Washington College.
Faculty Spotlight The Chronicle of Higher Education recently profiled Dan Cohen, director of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (CHNM) and associate professor in the history and art history department at Mason. The Chronicle described Cohen as “a leading architect in the design of a parallel academic universe, one filled with alternatives to tradition on many fronts.” At CHNM, Cohen co-directed the September 11 digital archive, which consists of more than 150,000 emails, voicemails, and blogs pertaining to the 9/11 terror attacks. The Library of Congress now archives the collection, its first major digital acquisition.
