ALUMNI NEWSLETTER Issue 2 May 2011 A Message From Jeff Smith ‘93, Head Athletic Trainer
Alumni and Friends, I hope everyone had a successful and healthy year and you are looking forward to a restful summer! The UMass Sports Medicine department had a great year! We got to enjoy visiting with many of our alumni and friends during our golf outing and at the NATA convention in Philadelphia last summer. These two events are getting bigger and bigger each year and we really enjoy catching up with everyone. Jenn and Lacy do a great job with the organization of these events. We hope that you might be able to join us this June 10th at our golf tournament at the Ledges in South Hadley and/or June 20th at the alumni gathering at NATA Convention in New Orleans! We said goodbye to Mike Welch and Jenae McCluskey and hello to our new grad assistants, Mark Lebeda and Nicole Hammond. We want to wish Mike and Jenae the very best and thank them for all they did for our program. We continue to have success in raising funds for continuing education and equipment. As you heard in our last newsletter, we moved into our new athletic training room space. It has been a tremendous transition and it has been a great year in the expanded space. With this new space, we have been looking to bring in new equipment for treatment and rehabilitation. In the last year, our entire full-time staff was able to learn the Graston Technique and we were able to purchase two sets of the instruments. We have been getting some great results with our student-athletes in helping them return to play. We will continue to look at different equipment or techniques to improve the quality of care and treatment for our student-athletes. We really appreciate all of the support our alumni and friends give us throughout the year! Many of you are able to participate in the golf tournament or alumni gathering. Some of you have not been able to participate in those outings but have still been great contributors to our program and we appreciate it so much. We thank all of you for that continued support that helps us get better and better each year. Have a great year and we look forward to seeing everyone throughout the year or this summer for some golf!!! Take Care, Jeff
Graduate Assistant Updates
As we said farewell to our two outgoing graduate assistants, we welcomed two more on board for the 2010-2011 year. Mike Welch ’10 and Jenae McCluskey ‘10 graduated from the Kinesiology program with Master of Science degrees in May of 2010 and will be moving on to the next phases of their careers. We are thrilled to announce that Mike was accepted into the Simmons College PhD program for Health Professions Education and is working part-time as an athletic trainer at Simmons College as well. He will attend Simmons College along with fellow alum Kristen Wilson ’08 who entered her third and final year of the program this past fall. Of his time at UMass, Mike said, “My two years at UMass were the best decision I made as a post-graduate athletic training student. The relationships I built, coupled with the knowledge and experience I gained, have given me opportunities that two years before, I did not anticipate having. UMass Sports Medicine is an organization that allowed me to establish myself as a health care professional, and ultimately, provided me with every tool necessary to excel in the world of Sports Medicine.” We are also very happy to announce that Jenae accepted a position as an assistant athletic trainer at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. began her duties alongside former UMass intern Heather Carr (2007-2008) who was hired around the same time. Jenae said, “The last two years I have spent at UMass have given me a tremendous opportunity to grow as a clinical athletic trainer and as an individual. My experience here has prepared me for my future as an athletic trainer at Merrimack College and beyond. I would like to truly thank everyone on the sports medicine staff for their support and willingness to help me become the knowledgeable and confident athletic trainer I am today.” Mike and Jenae will be sorely missed as enthusiastic and knowledgeable members of our staff and we wish them nothing but great success for the future! Mike and Jenae’s replacements certainly had big shoes
