AMAZING GCSE SUCCESS

Bosworth Academy students and staff are celebrating another brilliant set of GCSE results. Outcomes have been incredibly high in a range of GCSE subjects and are particularly strong in the reformed GCSEs English Language, English Literature and Maths (graded 9 to 1). Students have made excellent progress in their time with us since joining Bosworth Academy. Despite only being at the Academy for two years students have made dramatic progress in this short period of time. The new content of the reformed GCSEs is more demanding and controlled assessments have been removed, yet our students have continued to achieve the highest grades (many 9s) and show immense improvements in their learning. We are now looking forward to many of our students joining us in our Sixth Form.

Simon Brown, Head of School said, “We are thrilled at the achievement of our students this year. They have worked incredibly hard since joining us for the start of their GCSEs and achieved well beyond what they even thought was possible - showing a real growth mindset. Staff and students have worked creatively and collaboratively to overcome the challenges faced by new GCSEs and this has resulted in brilliant outcomes.”

Amazing Achievement

Rory Cunningham obtained incredible grades including an 8 in Maths, 4A*, 2A, a 7 in English Literature and a 6 in English Language. The Science Department describe Rory as being “an outstanding Science student and has always shown a great talent and flair for Chemistry.” His parents added, “The opportunities and creative feedback provided by teachers really helps students achieve their very best.” Rory is studying Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths right here at Bosworth Academy.

Bosworth Academy is a highly inclusive school and takes students from a range of educational backgrounds. The staff focus on ensuring that learning is relevant, engaging and creative so that students are engaged in what they do and aspire to ‘be better than they thought they could be’.

Shining Success

Katie Twelves achieved an outstanding set of results gaining a 9 in English Language, 3A*, 4A and 7 in both English Literature and Maths. The PE Department describe Katie as being “the most outstanding GCSE PE student that we have been fortunate to teach for a number of years, if not ever”. Katie’s mother says, “The masterclasses and revision sessions were great and the way English provided support at the beginning of Year 11 was fantastic”. Katie is continuing her studies at Bosworth Academy studying PE, French, Biology and Chemistry.

A-LEVEL

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE

SUCCESS Once again this summer, students at Bosworth Academy are celebrating excellent A-Level and AS-Level results, with the majority of students now progressing to their choice of University.

“Our results day is truly a day of celebration for our students following their many years of hard work, commitment and dedication to their studies. Our staff should also be very proud of the great level of expertise and support that they have provided.” - Simon Brown, Head of School. Some individual successes included: • Patrick Taylor achieved A*, A*, A*, A* and is now reading Chemistry at the University of Bath. • William Beckwith-Chandler achieved A*, A*, A*, A and is now reading Mathematics at the University of Exeter. • Eleanor Torrance achieved A*, A*, A*, A and is now reading Biology at the University of Nottingham. • Amy Smith achieved A*, A*, A, A and is now reading Engineering at the University of Cambridge. • Connor Gauntlett achieved A*, A*, A, A and is now reading Mathematics at University. • Chelsea Rosak achieved A*, A*, A, A and is now reading Law at University.

Sixth Form students jumping for joy with their results

Bosworth Academy has a policy of challenging all students to “be better than they thought they could be” by raising the aspirations of every learner. This is the first set of A-level results following the introduction of reformed, linear A-levels in many subjects with updated, more demanding content. Therefore the last two years has proven to be quite a challenge for students and for teachers as they adapt to these changes, though one where all have really risen to the challenges faced. In facilitating subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English a remarkable 78 A*/A grades were achieved by students. As well as success measured in grades we are confident that our young people leaving Bosworth have many valuable attributes to contribute to their communities and future employers; their empathy and support for others, their capacity for moral leadership, their ability to work as part of a team or to take the initiative, as well as being thoughtful, kind and tolerant.

Breaking The Language Barrier

Shan Yang celebrates her results with Head of School Simon Brown

Shan Yang came to Bosworth Academy in Year 11 after moving to the UK from China. Despite not being able to speak English, her determination and the help provided by staff meant she was able to learn the language and obtained As in Maths, Physics and Chemistry in an incredibly short space of time. Shan is now attending the University of Nottingham to read Accounting and Finance.

On the evening of September 7th, students, parents and staff gathered at the King Power Stadium to celebrate outstanding performances in the summer examinations. On arrival students and parents alike were unaware of the subject in which they were to be awarded, adding to the excitement and intrigue of the evening. Awards on Charlie Alcock (centre) celebrating his award with the evening rewarded the very top performers of each alumni brother Frazer (left) and mother (right) subject at both GCSE and A Level. Each of the awards were presented by the Heads of Faculty from all of the subject areas, supporting the announcements with beautifully written pen portraits. The evening was supported by four outstanding performances which ranged from Indian Drums to a Solo Pianist. In addition to this, Deputy Head of School, Ben White, invited ex-student Katherine Smith to answer questions about her experiences at Bosworth Academy and then Cambridge University. This part of the evening was really well received by students and parents, with one parent commenting on how Katherine really resonated with the students.

ICELANDIC ADVENTURE

At the beginning of the summer a group of 11 students and 2 teachers went on a once in a lifetime trip. Ask anyone who went on the World Challenge trip to Iceland, and they will agree that it was an incredible experience. For some of us, the trip was like nothing we had ever seen before: a brand new country with a whole host of exciting activities and memories to be made. With a diverse group ranging from Year 8 to Year 13, it was a completely inclusive week, testing our comfort zones and social skills as well as our fitness and outdoor skills. One thing is for sure, without the specific group of people who signed up to the trip, Iceland wouldn’t have been seen in the same light.

Right from the start, people in our group were experiencing new situations, as some people had never been on a plane. It seems that there was something particularly exciting about being in an airport with two excellent members of staff and a group of fellow students. Everyone was filled with anticipation of what was to come. What would the food be like? Would we cope with the strenuous walks? Luckily, every aspect of the trip fitted together to create a memorable week for all thirteen of us. One detail that made the trip seem risky and exciting was camping. For most nights, we slept in our two or three man tents, a little cold and often exhausted. On the penultimate night we encountered a harsh storm that nearly blew our tents away. As a precaution we found huge stones to hold down the pegs. This ensured our tents stayed in place throughout the night. In Iceland we had to cook our own meals every day except the first and last days. On our second day, we got up bright and early so we could go to the supermarket and buy our food supplies that would last us the whole week. We made sure that we had a balance of food, catering to everyone’s preferences with a variety of meals. When we went out for our hikes we made our own sandwiches and at night different people attempted cooking, which was rewarding for everyone as people learnt valuable skills and everyone got to eat a nice meal (except for the first night when Joe put too much garlic in his pasta!) For our rest and relaxation day most of us chose to go to the blue lagoon, there were a few complications with this involving finance and transport, but we came together as a group to resolve those issues. Going to the blue lagoon was one of the best experiences we had, it was a perfect way to end what had already been such a good week. Going into the geothermal pool and warming ourselves up after spending a week camping was especially good. Throughout the week the bonds between us kept growing (mostly thanks to Mr Palmer’s legendary werewolf card game!), we had all become so close and were so sad to leave each other at the end of the week.
