Amazing Species: Swan Goose The Swan Goose, Anser cygnoid, is listed as Vulnerable on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. It has its key breeding grounds in the border area between Russia, Mongolia and China, also breeding as far west as eastern Kazakhstan, and as far east as Sakhalin Island. The main threats to the Swan Goose are uncontrolled hunting, the development, drainage and ploughing of key habitats, pollution, and disturbance by people and cattle (causing high levels of chick mortality). With recent declines, virtually the entire global population of this species winters in the Yangtze floodplain, especially around Poyang Lake. This freshwater lake is by far the most important wetland for wintering waterbirds in East Asia, and is itself under threat from a proposed damming project. The Swan Goose is listed on Appendix II of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), and is legally protected in Russia, Mongolia and South Korea and some provinces in China. Urgent protection of the breeding, moulting and wintering grounds is also needed if this species is not to become rapidly more threatened.
