PGA YOUTH PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AWARI)
1.
Describe your philosophy, service, and commitment as it relates to PGA Youth Player Development, as well as your contribution to build and grow the game, the PGA Professionalo and the Association through Youth Player Development:
How many PGA Members do you know who have been working full time for over 16 years personally introducing golf to over 200,000 kids using Youth Development Programs they developed to "Build their Business" and "Grow the Game of Golf?" How many PGA Members do you know who have been serving the PGA, their Section, and their fellow Professionals by providing training and assistance to 100s of their peers both nationally and intemationally on "How to Do It?" That is what I have been doing and I'm proud to say that those numbers will only continue to grow larger as I continue to "Do My Thing" and share my Youth Development Programs with others seeking my help or advice. Although I have taught kids my entire career, my PASSION for working with kids really began back in 1999 when I was in the Northern Ohio Section serving as Director of Golf at Little Thunder Golf Course in Madison, Ohio. Little Thunder was one of the first 18 Hole Championship Caliber Golf Courses built in the United States specifically for kids 6 to 12 years old. It was my responsibility to open the facility and run it, which I did for 4 years. While I was at Little Thunder, I was honored to be invited and asked to parlicipate at Golf 20120. Golf 20120 gave me the opportunity to hear all the different ideas on growing the game that were being presented by our industry senior leaders and it really got me thinking, I felt that if the golf industry was really serious about growing our game it had to starl with kids. I thought back to that day at Little Thunder, when Dominic Antenucci, the Executive Director ofthe Northem Ohio Section, told me "Ty, you've found your niche, it is working with the kids." It was my time to step up and make it happen. I made a decision; I was determined to become a PGA Member making a difference by developing and implementing a Youth Program that would make any organization proud.
I
stole my philosophy from the McDonalds Corporation. It was over 50 years ago that the McDonalds Corporation came up with a brilliant simple business model. .. ifyou can hook kids, they will bring parents and grandparents with them. The idea is so simple but it works. That is why I adopted the McDonald's model and have been using it for the last 16 years, proving that it works just as well when applied.to growing golf. I wanted to develop a program that was simple and easy to follow. But to make that program work, I had to differ from my fellow professionals and go out into the community, so that's what I did. Guess what, once I went and got the kids the parents and grandparents have followed. My business has always been based on repeat business and referrals, and tr wouldn't have it any other way. With me it ALL starts with the kids, and what I have done with the kids throughout my career has not gone unnoticed, this being my 5th year as a finalist for the PGA's Youth Player Development Award.
2, The PGA of Americaos mission is to promote the enjoyment and involvement in the game of golf. What has been your most significant contribution to help build and grow the image of golf, the PGA Professional, and the Association in the Youth Player Development area, in order to accomplish this mission: My most significant contribution by far has been to show other PGA professionals how they can
PGA YOUTH PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AWARI) successfully grow the game and even build a business by going out into their communities. It has been my pleasure, and I feel my responsibility, to share my passion with so many others. Over the years I have received literally 100s of phone calls from professionals around the world asking me for help. and in every instance I have provided it. I am proud to say that for years our former CEO Joe Steranka would tell others about my In School Program while Ron Stepanek and the staffin the Play Golf America Department, which had identified my program as 1 of 5 that was capable of going national, would constantly refer members to me. Our present COO Danell Crall, as well as our current Vice President Suzy Whaley, both refer to me as one of our "Super Stars." Suzy told me at the Youth Conference in Pinehurst that she had been using my program for years after first hearing about it from Joe Steranka. Even former PGA President Alan Wronowski has gone on record writing "we need 28,000 members just like Ty Andersen." Four years ago at the Dixie Section Annual Business Flanning Session I attended, the Section Leadership dubbed me "Our Rock Star" and asked if I would allow the Section to adopt my In School Youth Development Program "Building Swings 4 a Lifetime" as its "Growth of the Game" initiative. My answer was YES!
3.
List up to ten (10) programs targeted toward Youth Player Development that you have developed and/or implemented throughout your career. Please identify the most significant impact of each program in terms of number of new player introductions, development of character and values, percentage of players retained into adulthood, customer satisfaction, communify outreach, facility awaren ess, etc. : 1 - In School Golf Prograrn - "Building Swings 4 a Lifetime." This is a really hard question for me, not because of the programs but because of the way you want results measured. I am an old PGA Professional; my strength is working with people, not compiling data and definitely not new technology. I have plenty of programs and keep numbers, but over the years I have tried to keep my bookkeeping simple. When in a community I have always obtained all numbers from the schools or the appropriate organrzation. At the course I have always logged in clinic participation and individual lessons on a daily basis. I total number of kids each day, each week, each month and each year. Whenever I have been asked to do a program for the PGA I have always forwarded all the information they requested and I can only assume that what was forwarded is on file at the headquarters. I work as an Independent Contractor and do not have a staff to track the follow-up sales on my lessons. As only one person tying to generate and build a business while growing the game, my first priority has and always will be to service my customers the best way that I know - as a PGA Teaching Professional in their community or at the course.
4. From the previous list, select a program that you currently offer at your facility. Give a complete description of the program to include number of participants, why it has had a positive impact on Youth Player Development, and the reasons/results that have made it so successful: "Building Swings 4 a Lifetime" is a proven program that will only continue to grow. According to PGA of America, it's 1 of 5 Programs that can go national and has been adopted by the Dixie Section as its "Growth of the Game" initiative. It has allowed me work with over 200,000 kids myself in numerous different school systems in 5 different states, and I am now teaching others how to do it. Here's is an example of how "Building Swings 4 a Lifetime" works. Eight years ago, I moved from Naples to Dothan, Alabama to be closer to my grandkids. Wherever I go the first thing I do is find a fihd a golf course that will let me teach, and then I find a school that will let me do my program. There are many different ways to get into a school; in this case I went to the Elementary School attended by my grandkids, no problem. Whenever I go into a school, I take over the PE classes for that day" Usually I do 6 classes with typically 60 to 80 kids per class. The largest class I've ever done was at Headlands Elementary School where I had 160 3'd grade kids on the football field in one class. My first day in Dothan at Northside Methodist, after doing 3 classes I had 3 phone calls from 3 different schools that wanted me to come do the program. You see, Principals and PE Teachers do talk to Principals and PE Teachers at other schools. By the end of my first year in Dothan I was in 14
PGA YOUTH PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AWARI) schools, my second year the number grew to 18, and over the years I have done as many as 25 schools around the Dothan/Wiregrass area.If a school sees a program that is SIMPLE, SAFE, and where the kids are learning and having fun, they will ask you back, and they will tell others about it. They will grow your program for you with their recommendations.
in elementary schools have never had the opportunity to try golf, I wanted develop a program that would show kids that golf is F{.IN. I also wanted to create interest so that
Because most kids
some ofthe kids would want to go to the golf course and participate in an After School Program, but even more important build the motor skill necessary for a golf swing. Being an Old Pro I was aware
of the OLD PGA First Swing Program where you stood in front of the kids, hanging your arms to form an elephants trunk, and then lead them through the 4 positions of a golf swing - Address, Top of Backswing, Impact and Finish. What I love about the kids is that they can just imitate what you do and they are like little sponges, they will soak up everything that you throw at them. Keep in mind that their attention spans are only 7 or 8 minutes so you have to change gears on them. That's what makes this program so successful, it is fast paced, flexible, everything is measurable, and it builds the motor skill necessary for GOLF SWINGS. That's the real VALUE of this program, if you can build the motor skill - GOLF SWING - early enough, for them it is just like learning how to ride a bicycle, once they get it, they've got it and won't forget it, and it will be there in years to come when they need it. So each year when I return to a school, it re-enforces that motor skill and the kids swings will only get better. The kids and my fellow PGA Teachers may not thank me now, but they will later. The bottom line is that "Building Swings 4 aLifelime" is a SIMPLE Program that can reach huge amounts of kids. Did I mention I've taught over 200,000 kids myselfl Schools love it, the kids love, and it WORKS. I recently got to meet the new Dothan City School Superintendent Dr. Ledbetter, who ended up being on our Dixie Section "Centennial Spotlight." He greeted me by saying, "I've heard so much about the great things you have been doing for the kids here in Dothan and
particularly for our schools and for that, I want to thank you. Would you be willing to do me a favor? I'd like to have golf teams in my middle schools, could you make that happen?" Not only did I tell him I would make that happen but I asked the Superintendent if he would like to have those same teams in his Elementary schools. His response, "'We're going to make that happen." I can envision in the near future a,PGA Golf League comprised of teams from the Dothan City Schools. You asked the reason why this program has been so successful, it is because you have a dedicated PGA professional running it.
5. How has your leadership and commitment to Youth Player Development
inspired, motivated and developed positive character traits and values within participants. Include as part of this question, one letter of support from a parent or past participant. NOTE: this l'etter is in addition to the letters of recommendation: Since my old days as an Air Force Officer till now, my leadership and commitment to anlthing I do has never been questioned. I have always, and will continue to lead by example, and my commitm'ent to growing the game through Youth Player Development is proven. When I leave a school they allow me to send a flyer home offering my After School Golf Progranat the golf course where I am currently teaching. In many cases the teachers ask their students to write a letter to Coach Ty about their golf experience. My In School Program has inspired and motivated kids to come out to my
PGA YOUTH PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AWARI) After School Programs. Although part of my In School Program Curriculum includes talking about the positive character traits and the values that are attributed to golf, it is at the course where I can really focus not only on building the kids as golfers but also the character traits and values to be gained during the process. From the flyers sent out over the years, I get plenty ofphone calls from parents. My favorite calls go something like this, "My daughter just brought home this flyer from school about a golf program. She has never been interested in anything but she wants to try this thing called golf, how do I sign her up?" I have received lots of those calls! I've had tons of letters written by the kids that the schools have sent me, and I treasure every one of them. I could have sent you some of my favorites, but as part of this package you asked for only one letter of support from a parent or past participant. The Robinson family has provided that letter which has been included. Is Coach Ty having an IMPACT? That's up to you to decide.
6, Explain how your work and effort in the area of Youth Player Development throughout your career has benefited your current employment situation: I am a PGA Professional, I am my own boss, and I am doing what I love to do, TEACH. It doesn't get any better than that and I owe it all to the hard work and effort I put forth in the area of Youth Player Development over the last 16 years. It has paid off big time, not only for me, but for others as well. Little did I know what I starled back in Ohio by going out in the community and into the schools would become my PASSION and lead me to where I am today, a finalist for the 5th time in the PGA's Youth Player Development Award" Just by making an effort to live up to my responsibility as a PGA Member to grow the game, it has not only allowed me to become independent and build my own business, but it has allowed me to help others build theirs. When the PGA Professionals that were employed by Dick's Sporting Goods were all let go, Dixie Section President Rob Clark called me and asked if I would be willing to show those professionals in the Section who wanted help, how I had built and grown my business through kids. Of course I said yes. One professional, David Snyder, called. David came to Dothan to see my program and a week later David called me back. David told me that he has been a PGA Member for 20 years but prior to that he had been a PE School Teacher for 10 years and said, "I want to do this program and I am not going to change one thing, all those kids understood everything you wanted them to do and your lesson plan was flawless." David implemented the program and did 26 schools in Huntsville last year; he is on his way to building his own business and growing the game through kids.
PGA Professional Dale Wiggins, a former Director of Junior Golf Progru-, fo, the North Florida Section who now lives in Dothan, told me, "I'd heard about and saw pictures of your program, but seeing is believing. I thought I knew how to teach juniors; now I want to learn from you and be part of this program." I mentored and trained Dale who is now Director of Instruction at Fort Rucker Where he is implementing my program. Dale called me a Pro's Pro who is totally unselfish and only wants to see the game grow and I really appreciate those comments. My Section and fellow Professionals all know that I firmly believe that the kids are our future and the best way to grow our great game, and I will do anlthing I can to make that happen.

7. Describe your use of pGA of America tools and resources,
such as PerformanceTrak, Get Golf Ready, PGA Junior League, etc., and how they have supported your efforts with Youth Player Development: I have tried to supporl any program developed and offered by the Player Development Department in the effort to grow the game. If I could include it into my business t ila. As proof of -y y.u, after year I was repeatedly appointed to the PGA President's Grouth of the "ffortr, Game Council and was formally recognized at the PGA Merchandise Show as a Play Golf America Top 100 performer. At one time, Ihad,7 different programs registered at National Fieadquarters with piay Golf America, 6 of them were Youth Player Development Programs. The only way I have differed from the programs being offered by the Player Development Department is that until recent years their progru-, heavily targeted for adults, mine were always, and still are, aimed at youth player Development.
*.r"
Though I have not incorporated Perfonnance Trak into my business and my Get Golf Ready Programs consist of kids, I have been involved with PGA Junior League. HLre in Dothan, we currently have one PGA Junior League Team but it is coached by the Head pGA professional at Dothan Country Club which is a private course. My involvement thus far is that I teach five of the kids that are on that team. Now with the support of the new Dothan City School Superintendent, I can realistically envision a PGA Golf League built through the schools in the near future. Lastly, I do and will continue to keep sending kids to Drive, Chip and Putt Competition"

I am a PGA Member and I take the responsibility that goes with that seriously. Our charler is to "grow the game." With me, that means kids, which means Youth Player Development. I know I differ from my most of my peers because I go out into and spend a lot of my time in the community. But it has been totally rewarding. My community looks at me as a PGA Professional serving as an Ambassador for the PGA, my Section, and all the clubs I have been associated with over the years. Presently, I represent Highland Oaks Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Dothan, Alabama, and the Callaway Golf Company, who believes in what I am doing and has kept me on its Staff for the last 10 years. When people see that PGA or Callaway logoed gear coming they recognize it's "Coach Ty," and I'm proud to be able to say that. My wife gets a kick out of it when we are out to dinner or at a movie and a kid will come up to me and give me a high 5 or a hug. When I go into a school l get more hugs and get to sign more autographs than you can imagine. The kids everywhere I have been all, know who "Coach Ty" is. I ended the Dixie Section's "Centennial Spotlight" that was s.hown on the Golf Channel with the comment "it's really FUN to impact someone's life," to me it doesn't get any better than that. For the last 16 years I have been dedicated to growing the game I love and mybusiness with Youth Player Development Programs. The kids have been My PASSION,I am just one guy who wants to make a difference, and I will continue to try to do that for as long as I can. I am truly honored to have been nominated for this award" Thank vou for vour consideration.

Dear Special Awards Committee,
I am writing to express the supporl of the Dixie PGA Board of Directors towards Ty Andersen, PGA for the PGA of America's Youth Player Development Award for 2016. Many of you are already familiar with Ty's work as this is the fifth time he has been a finalist for this award. Ty continues to do outstanding work in Youth Player Development year after year. Ty's success in Youth Player Development is not limited to the Dixie Section. He developed his In-School program in the South Florida and Northern Ohio Sections, and then continued it in the Dixie and New England Sections. Ty has transported his In-School Junior Golf program into four different sections with ease, demonstrating the effectiveness and portability of the program. The leadership of the Dixie Section thinks so highly of Ty and his programs, that we elected to focus our PGA Centennial Spotlight, aired on the Golf Channel on the Ty and his In School work. The spotlight turned out terrific and really showed the passion Ty has for teaching children and growing the game of golf. While the piece focused on one person at one school that day, we did our best to get the point across that Ty is more than willing to share, and has shared, his blueprint for teaching in schools with any PGA professional that is interested in doing it themselves.
Ty is very active in our section and is currently our
Co-Chairperson of our Junior Golf Committee, with his focus being growing the game of golf through Youth Player Development. The Dixie Section strongly recommends Ty Andersen for the 2016 Youth Player Development Award. Ty would be a shining example of success in Player Development if selected for this Award. Thank you to all oh the Special Awards Committee for your consideration of Ty Andersen and for all the work you've put in on the Awards. Sincerely,
t614'mBart Rottier Executive Director, Dixie PGA
