College students from the Lions For Christ at UAFS will be assisting in our services this evening. They will stay to share our customary end-of-the-month sandwiches and dessert with us following the service. Our next monthly elders, deacons, and men’s business meeting will be held on Sunday evening, May 8, downstairs. Men, we encourage and need your assistance. Plans are beginning to get underway for our summer VBS. There are sheets on the center table listing the option of several dates. Please look it over and let us know which dates might work best for your family. Also please consider volunteering to assist with our VBS this year. Teachers and workers are always needed. Jan Cagle, Brad’s wife, is in the second phase of her treatment for cancer. Ervin Pearcy, Donna Bridges’ oldest brother, has been diagnosed with cancer in multiple areas. An additional PET scan is to be done May 5. Faye Townsend passed away in Little Rock last week. Her funeral is set for this Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 at McConnell’s Funeral Home in Greenwood. WHEN WE WERE KIDS Can you even remember that far back? There wasn’t very much to play with in Washburn Valley in the 40’s and 50’s growing up. For a period of time there was no TV because there was no electricity. (and, no, it wasn’t a power outage due to storms) No electronic games were around to fill our hands and minds with adventure. Your playground was found in the hills and streams located outside your front door. To fill those idle hours when regular chores were completed we did what kids have done for thousands of years. We made our own fun. One of the games that I liked the most, and that we played often, was the simple game of hide and seek. You didn’t need an extensive rule book to play the game. If you weren’t “it” you simply found a really good hiding place and stayed put while someone searched for you. Part of the exciting part was finding that perfect hiding place. It was always a place where you could see without being seen...a place where no one would ever think to look...a place that insured your ultimate victory. If you are reading this the chances are really good that you have played this simple game many times. I just want to remind us all that though our childhood days are a distant memory we are still looking for that “perfect hiding place” as we journey through life, and our search for that place seems to have taken on a greater sense of urgency. We aren’t children anymore. The dangers we face in a world gone wrong are not figments of a childish imagination. They are quite real...and really do pose a threat to our efforts to find real peace and safety in this world. Regardless of the amount of money we make we can’t hide behind our money. Regardless of how educated we become our education will never be sufficient to hide us from the horrors that stalk this world. Does the world judge you as healthy, wealthy, and wise? The health, wealth, and wisdom of this world provides no lasting shelter. Just where is that perfect hiding place? You already know. Most of you are resting safely within already. Let David tell you. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1 “You are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble. You surround me with joyous songs of salvation.” Psalm 32:7 “For in time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock.” Psalm 27:5 “Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man; thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.” Psalm 31:20 David knew all about needing a secret hiding place. He spent a lot of time fleeing from the threat of death at the hands of King Saul. In the midst of one such flight he wrote, “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul trusts in You; yes, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge until these calamities be overpast.” Psalm 57:1 The darkness that threatens you or me can be no greater than the darkness that threatened him as he dwelled in the darkness of that cave. Could it be that the darkness that surrounded him and us is merely the “very shadow of His wings?” “How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings for Thou hast been a shelter for us.” Psalm 36:7 Don’t let the world confuse or deceive you. He truly is our “hiding place.” Larry B “Thy Word Is Truth” Those Who Will Serve Today-April 24, 2016
