WELCOME

The past school year, 2015-2016, was full of hard work, expansion, support, and accomplishments at Little Stars School and Shanti Niketan. We were finally able to expand our school to Class 12. Along with renovations to the old building, we were able to further develop our new building by constructing solar panels on the roof and two new rooms, which we hope will be occupied by a doctor and a social worker for our students. The hostel girls are as busy as ever with their studies
along with their new self-defense, reading groups, and computer program classes. In this annual report you will find the highlights of our year. As always, we would like to thank all of the friends and supporters of Rishi Pragatisheel Shikshan Sansthan who make all of our hard work possible. Thank you and enjoy!
OVERVIEW WHO ARE WE Little Stars School was founded by Asha Pandey in 1996 with 7 children on a rooftop. Asha was a public school teacher, Finally she decided to open a school for underprivileged children of Varanasi and now Little Stars School provides an affordable and complete (pre-nursery to Class 12) education to 900 of the most underprivileged students in the city. Asha opened the hostel, in 2004 on the second floor of the old school building, which provides a safe home for orphan, needy and street girls. The hostel usually houses up to 25

girls ranging from 3 to 18 years old and offers these girls a nice place to live with an excellent 'Little Stars education', and a family environment. OUR STUDENTS The students of Little Stars School come from some of the poorest families in Varanasi, most of which live in Nagwa, the slum neighborhood where the school is based. Many of the families have recently moved to Varanasi from nearby villages and are struggling to find work and provide a better life for their families. This hardship causes many internal problems for families such as substance abuse, physical abuse, and child labor as they struggle to overcome poverty. Many of our students’ parents are illiterate and do not understand the importance of educating their children. The little girl on the pictures below used to beg in the streets but as you can see she is now enjoying a good education at our school.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016
Our school works to help these families understand the importance and value of an education and female independence in breaking the cycle of poverty. Little Stars School offers these children a Hindi and English medium education with certain classes, such as Math and Science, in English. This affordable education helps keep these students from working and begging on the streets and gives them a chance of receiving a higher education and higher paid jobs.

DENTAL PROGRAM 20 years ago, Britta, a long-term volunteer from Denmark who has been visiting and helping Little Stars for the past 17 years, initiated, financed, and began running a dental program for the school children.
This year Little Stars School provided Class 12 to the students, which was a huge step for our organization as we are now able to provide and ensure a complete education for our students from pre-nursery to Class 12. We offer three different tracks to our students: commerce, art, and science, giving them the ability to pursue and focus on their personal interests.

This year one of our volunteer Roma Singh, started a university scholarship project for the five top female students graduating from Class 12. This scholarship covers the cost for them to attend a local university for the next four years including the costs for their tuition, supplies, and spending money. These scholarships are helping change these girls’ lives, including 2 of our hostel girls.
These 5 students are lucky, they have a long term sponsorship by Sanjeev Singh as long as they keep studying.
SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS
GANDHI DAY On 2nd of Oct. It was wonderful to see the students celebrate nonviolence and a life of simplicity and devotion As part of the celebration, we had a contest where we invited any student who wanted to participate to come to school in their best Gandhi costume , Article on Gandhi, and then a winner was chosen by our Chief Guest! Winners received a prize.
ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016
As part of our cultural program, we not only give students a break on major holidays but also facilitate festivities to give our students a safe space to celebrate away from the chaos of the streets.

CILDREN’S DAY / Sports Day Children’s day or “Bal Divas,” which was celebrated on November 14th, was quite an event this year. This holiday, celebrated on the birthday of Chacha Nehru, a children rights activist, celebrates the rights, care, and education of children. Here at Little Stars we invite our children to participate in our annual Children’s Day food fair and Sports .

CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATIONS SOLAR PANELS This year our major construction project was the solar panels that were installed on the roof of the new building. We were able to make this installation thanks to the generous support of Roma Singh, who raised the funds for the solar panels in Singapore. The installation will not only help Little Stars School save money but it is also much more environmentally friendly. NEW ROOMS Along with the solar panels, Roma also fundraised money for the completion of two rooms in the new building. These rooms were built for the purpose of a school doctor and social worker. Our hope is to be able to hire two professionals so that our students have access to
ROOFTOP CLASSROOM / As our student body and programming keeps expanding, the number of students we serve keep growing! We are currently working on securing funds to expand our pre-nursery to UKG classes by hiring more teachers and staff members to manage those students and the appropriate curriculum; however, this means we would need extra classrooms. This year, we were able to construct a classroom on the rooftop of the old building in efforts to help keep classes small and manageable. This extra space really helps in maintaining the quality of education and atmosphere we offer our students. Renovation-- Bathroom / water tank at the old building With the new building complete, we are focusing most of our construction funds on renovations for the old building, which means bathroom renovations this year. Students in the old building now have access to clean and nicely tiled bathrooms.

All these girls arrived by C W C (Child Welfare Comity) at Shanti Niketan. They're all in police custody but they will stay here until their court case are over. Some ran away from home and got married before 18, and police caught them. Some other ran away from home due to an hostile environment for the past few years and were seeking for a safe place to grow up. Their parents were not taking any action due to their poverty.
