25 years of helping our community grow
2016 Calendar & Annual Report 2014 - 2015
2014 - 2015 Annual Report This has been a special year as we have celebrated our 25th anniversary supporting young people and adults with learning disabilities offering training and employment opportunities. We have achieved so much over the years from humble beginnings with a few people working on allotments to operating 3 large sites with over 16 acres of land and offering 300+ trainee places a week. At the heart of what we do are the people and they remain our central focus. The trainees, team members, volunteers, carers, trustees and customers all play
their part in creating a strong and positive support network. I speak on behalf of the organisation in giving my thanks to everyone involved in our work. It never fails to amaze me what can be achieved with support, positivity and determination. It would be unfair not to give a mention to the chickens at this point as they provide us not only with beautiful eggs but endless amusement and inspiration. I look forward to another successful year and feel very lucky to be part of such a creative and positive organisation. Keely Siddiqui Charlick Chief Executive

Some highlights of 2014 -2015
Plans for the future:
• We continued to offer training and employment services to young people and adults with learning disabilities within Hertfordshire and this exceeded 125 different people a week. We have made inroads into Bedfordshire and are now offering trainee places there. We expect this to increase over the coming years. This is very good news for the trust as it further diversifies our income and customer base.
• Recruit a second service manager so CEO is free to develop the Trust
• We have introduced a robust internal quality assurance system to improve the quality and consistency of our work across the 3 sites. • We produced a Trustee Handbook for current and future Board members. • We offered a home to The Repair Shed, a Community Action Dacorum service, at the Hemel Food Garden. The Repair Shed aims to offer a service to people over 50 to repair, recycle and reuse whilst building a strong network of support. • We were awarded RHS “It’s Your Neighbourhood” status on all 3 sites. • We continued to meet the standards of Hertfordshire County Council contract and enjoy a positive partnership. • The Trust ensured that all staff received both mandatory and enhanced training in social care skills, Health and Safety and horticulture.
Grants to improve our sites including: • Lottery Awards for All funded a new training building at Hemel Food Garden • HCF funded a new workshop at Hemel Food Garden. This will support not only our trainees but our partnership work with The Repair Shed. • Baily Thomas Fund awarded us a grant for our training and employment services. • Dacorum Borough Council and individual councillors contributed to projects across our sites including £25,000 for local food projects. • Inspire 2 Enterprise funded a piece of consultation and research into sustainability.
• Update transport • CEO to focus efforts on funding for identified capital and revenue • CEO to set out a plan for developing a 4th site • To increase our trainees numbers from Beds and Bucks • To develop a range of strategies including: * Sustainability * Social Enterprise * Communications • To develop a specialist service for people with Autism and Aspergers including the creation of a tranquillity area on each site • To open our trainee services 6 days a week • Increase social enterprise activity and revenue • To create a detailed development plan for each site, some highlights are: Activity Centre: Allotments on SSN Hemel Food Garden: Cafe on site New toilet block and improved trainee facilities Chickens on site Northchurch: Develop food growing across the site Develop a conservation & teaching centre
Treasurer’s Report Howard Wilson were appointed as our accountants for the year and yet again provided an excellent service. Our consolidated restricted funds position is £220,671 and unrestricted funds is £208,096. The final consolidated accounts show a deficit of £51,387 but this is largely made up of £68,988 accounted for in depreciation due to the amount of capital investment we have had over the last few years. The figure also takes into account our decision to seek to increase our unrestricted reserves. During the year the Charity, not including our trading arm, made a surplus of £14,884, which involved the increase in general unrestricted reserves by £58,462 to £217,557 and the reduction in restricted reserves of £43,579 to £129,245 Our Trading Company made a loss in the year of £57,447, of which £37,243 was depreciation, so the net cash loss was £20,204. Overall a good performance and we hope to improve on this next year.
