Rationale The essence of our relationship with each other is underpinned by the Gospel Values of: Responsibility Cooperation Prayer Truthfulness Loyalty Independence Self Esteem Mutual Respect In accordance with these Gospel Values and the Vision Statement, St Mary and St Michael Catholic Primary School states that any form of bullying is totally unacceptable.

Bullying incidents in schools involve 3 types of students: 1. Bullies 2. Victims 3. Bystanders Rights and Responsibilities Our school aims to further the education and well being of each student. To ensure this, students have both rights and responsibilities. Students are responsible for their own actions and are obliged to see that the rights of each other person in the school are guaranteed. We believe that every student at our school has the right to: Learn without being disrupted by others. To be treated courteously and respectfully. Work in a safe environment. Feel proud of the school and themselves. We believe that every child at our school has the responsibility to: Not interfere with any other students learning. treat all members of the school community with courtesy and respect. not endanger others by word or action. act in ways that help build a good public image of the school.
Procedures What we advise students can do if bullied or if they witness bullying: Tell the person/group to stop. Tell the teacher and ask for help including putting name in class Bubble Time box Keep away from the person/group. Talk or draw about it with friends or family. Stop any behaviour which may make them a victim.
Strategies for all staff when dealing with bullying. Talk with students involved. Inform Headteacher Inform parents and arrange an interview. Complete an incident log form and hand in to the Headteacher who will file and analyse any patterns. Possible time out or exclusion from class, the playground, trips or school at Headteachers discretion. Individual/group counselling and support for victims and bullies Professional help referral Eg. Victim Support
Strategies which will be used to teach students how to deal with Bullying and to prevent it: By explaining what Bullying is and the many different types through PowerPoint presentations. Discuss and role-play scenarios focusing on how victims feel when bullied. Role play bullying situations and how to respond and act. Discuss with students the sanctions of bullying at our school including informing Mrs Faulkner, their parents and possible exclusion. We use appropriate parts of the curriculum to help students develop social skills and ensure that we provide opportunities through everyday life at school for them to practice these skills through SEAL, Circle time, Rights Respecting assemblies and lessons and the Friendship Bus Stop. Through Religious Education and our whole school ethos of Christian belief we teach the values that show bullying to be unacceptable. Small group and individual counselling including Drama lessons, Learning Mentor support and the Place To Be. Recognition of Anti-Bullying week every year with focused activities for each class.
Working with Parents and Carers We wish to underline the importance of parents working in partnership with the school. All parents are given a shortened copy of the schools Anti-bullying policy. Parents are encouraged to inform the class teacher immediately if their child has told them they are being bullied or they are concerned about their child’s behaviour. Parents are invited to complete an anonymous online survey regarding their opinion of bullying at school during National Anti-bullying week.
