tightening your belt Executive Director Marybeth Green on her financial views, how she feels about TV and what it’s like to get paid to spread wellness.
Marybeth Green is a walking, talking advertisement for Melaleuca’s philosophy of total financial freedom. Even before enrolling with Melaleuca in 2004, Marybeth lived a debt-free life. Today, as an Executive Director, she has earned a Melaleuca lifetime income of $502,649, paid off multiple homes and achieved Melaleuca’s Total Financial Freedom award. And, most importantly, she continues to be completely debt-free.
Besides building your Melaleuca business for almost a decade, you’ve been volunteering with Crown Financial Ministries for over 25 years. What’s that like?

those who were struggling financially finally have hope again. It’s very exciting to be a small part of those changed lives. Lately, I’ve been able to use my marketing experience to help the ministry transition from being donor-based to more self-supporting. The need out there is very challenging, but it’s very rewarding to be a part of offering life-changing solutions.
How does Melaleuca fit in with their mission? Melaleuca teaches that living a debt-free life is the only way to live; that getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and helping others along the way is our goal. Our mission is all about helping out the “little guy.” And Melaleuca’s financial philosophy goes hand-in-hand with the help and coaching that Crown provides to people all over the world. Melaleuca is the

kind of business I’ve always been excited to share with everyone I meet.
Do any stories come to mind? Too many to count. I met a couple that had $30,000 in credit card debt on six different cards because of a failed multilevel marketing company. Now, a few years after enrolling with Melaleuca, and thanks to their new residual income, they’ve completely paid off all but two of those credit card. And one of those cards will be cleared this month!
If you’re willing to discipline yourself and put in the effort, you can do great things with a Melaleuca business.
What’s one Melaleuca value you can always point to? The concept of stewardship—physical, environmental, and financial—is what I constantly refer to. Melaleuca challenges us to use products that are safer for our homes and environment, to exercise and get proper nutrition, and to keep our financial houses in order. Melaleuca offers not only the means for the average person to get ahead financially, but encourages good stewardship.
Questions and Answers something I coach my builders to do, too. I’m just not interested in unnecessary spending on things like cable TV, fast food or manicures. I can live fine without those things. When you discipline your buying habits you feel such a great sense of peace.
What can you show for being a good steward of your finances? I’ve been disciplined enough to do good things with my Melaleuca income. To date, I’ve received 105 consecutive Melaleuca checks, and they’ve helped me completely pay for three homes: my former home, my current home and a rental property in Florida. And I’ve negotiated the best deals I can—and paid cash—for each car I’ve ever owned. Keeping my finances healthy has also allowed me to travel for the nonprofit as well as with my children.
It’s hard for some families to keep themselves in check financially. How do you do it? Melaleuca’s CEO, Frank L. VanderSloot has often repeated: “Character is the ability to follow through with a decision long after the emotion of making the decision has passed.” That’s something I try to remember; even though I may want something now, it’s almost always worth it to step back and ask whether a short-term want is worth losing a longterm gain. I’ve saved so much by sticking to my goals and living well within my income.
When you accomplish a big goal with your Melaleuca business, how do you treat yourself? When I received a Melaleuca check for $16,149 I was pretty tempted to go take some extravagant tour of Europe and really celebrate. But I’m me, so I bought this gorgeous antique plate I’d had my eye on for a while. I think I paid $100. So, no trip to Europe. Now, I’ve been to Europe before, but this time I kept the money in the bank. I felt good for not letting my spending get ahead of itself.
Do you ever feel like you’re sacrificing too much? My father always said, “When you see something you really want, go home and think about it first.” I’ve learned that the impulse usually fades pretty fast. I try to avoid spending money on things that are just unnecessary, and that’s

So, not too much TV watching these days? No way. I call television the “great income reducer.”
At what point in building a relationship with a business builder do you bring up finances? Is that ever a scary thing to do? It’s not scary, because Melaleuca has done a great job of weaving their values into the Delivering Wellness presentation, and I make it a point to jump right into what really matters to the potential customer. I usually begin my presentations from a very philosophical approach: What in their life isn’t adding up? Where are they out of synch? The next step is where I try to find how the value of Melaleuca will fit into their current needs. Are they looking for a company that has integrity? Are they looking for better, safer products for their homes? Are they looking for a way to financial freedom? If so, I get them to list their debts and then start dreaming of how it would feel to be completely debt-free. I ask, “What will that feel like?” And then we go to work.
You have a pretty grounded view on more than just saving money. What’s your philosophy on giving back? As counterintuitive as it sounds, I believe we receive more when we’re generous with what we’ve been given. So each year, I try to give away one percent more than I did the previous year. I gave 26 percent of my income away last year. It’s such a gratifying feeling to be in a position to help others.
That’s very admirable. It feels fantastic! Do you know what’s more thrilling than going out and spending money? It’s the empowerment of knowing you could go spend it all, but never succumbing to the temptation.
Any parting thoughts? There is something I’ve thought about over and over in regards to this business, and it’s something I always try to share with potential customers. It’s the simple fact that Melaleuca keeps paying me a great commission for spreading the values I’ve tried to live all my life. This really is The Wellness Company, and it’s great to be part of it.
