– Our session is based on a full Art of Digital Teaching professional development course that Odysseyware released earlier this year. We’ve built this course around the standards for quality online teaching developed by iNACOL. Session Objectives • Incorporate 3 keys of teaching digital citizenship. • Identify safe and effective digital tools. • Use formative assessments to engage with students through technology. Digital Teaching: Any instruction that utilizes digital technology and allows learners some measure of control over timing, pacing, and content. 3 Keys of Digital Citizenship 1. Establish Clear Expectations 2. Empower Safety and Effectiveness 3. Model Academic Integrity Student Engagement • Engage: To bind, as by pledge, promise, contract, or oath. • Effective digital teachers engage WITH students THROUGH technology. Make intentional connections. • When looking to add any technology, focus on tools that allow learners to interact with others. Gamified Formative Assessment • Gamification is a great way to do surface level formative assessment. Play a game, have some fun, collect quick data about how students are grasping concepts. Generate bar charts. Fun times for all! • Some learners don’t like games and don’t participate fully or at all. It can be a turnoff for non-competitive or anxious kids. Reflective Formative Assessment • Reflective formative assessment lets you take a more accurate temperature of collective knowledge. • Anonymous formative assessment can provide a forum where even the shyest, most introverted learner is willing to participate.
