THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF MOUNTAINEER BASKETBALL MOUNTAINEERS WRAP UP OVERSEAS TRIP Appalachian State University men’s basketball returned from a preseason overseas trip to Italy and Slovenia that spanned 11 days (Aug. 3-Aug. 14). Many of the players pointed out their great experiences in a variety of cities and places visisted, including the professional teams that were on the Mountaineers’ schedule. What did you think about your first time overseas and your time in Slovenia? Griffin Kinney: I thought it was awesome. It was my first time experiencing a European culture and I thought it was really cool with the food and seeing the diffferences from our culture. Everyone rides their bike and Ljubljana was a really laid back city. The Ljubljana Castle was pretty sweet, it’s right there in the city and its up on the mountain. We learned a lot about the history behind it and just being able to be somewhere that’s that old was incredible. Patrick Good: We took a beautiful day trip to Piran, Slovenia. It’s along the coast by the Adriatic Sea, so we got to swim a little bit. During one of our games, there was a lot of attention and we got to sign autographs for kids and trade t-shirts with the other team. It was a great all-around experience. We bonded well on and off the court and being in a foreign country definitely helped our communication as a team as we prepare for the season. What were some of your favorite things that you experienced while in Italy? Matt O’Boyle: Traveling to Venice was amazing. I thought it was incredible and a great experience. There was a lot of history there. We got to practice when we were in Treviso and I thought that was good, it was good to get back in the gym with the guys. By far my favorite part of the trip was when we stopped in Lake Garda on the way to Bormio. It was a ton of fun seeing everyone in the water having a good time. How was it playing professional teams while you were overseas? Tyrell Johnson: It was a great opportunity for us to get better as a team. We got to know each other’s tendencies and really prepare for our season. Ronshad Shabazz: Words can’t explain how much fun we had on that trip. Our team bonding really helped grow our chemistry as a team and I’m just really thankful to be able to go on a trip like that and experience great things. To be able to play against professionals that are getting lots of money to play and to be able to learn from them was such a valuable experience. Jake Babic: It’s a completely different game overseas and the level of play was high. We were playing against grown men the whole time we were over there and that was definitely an eye opener. We can take all of what we learned and build on the positives and bring that to our tough non-conference schedule and go into Sun Belt play with an extra edge.

THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF MOUNTAINEER BASKETBALL A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ASSISTANT COACH... How do you start a typical day at this point in the season? MR: I usually start by attending the conditioning session with the team, which starts at about 6 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for this week. At 8 a.m. on other days, I go to our first group’s session in the weight room session which begins at 8 a.m. Then, when I am back in the office I begin to respond to recruitable athletics emails and coaches. What kinds of things go on when you bridge morning strength and conditioning and afternoon practice? MR: I typically dedicate at least one hour daily of watching film. It can be our players, future opponents, offensives sets, etc. I do that before going up for our second group’s session in the weight room at 11 a.m. After lunch, our third group hits the weights. Every Tuesday or Wednesday, I have time scheduled to have academic meetings with players to go over what is going on in their classes that week as well.

Assistant Coach Mantoris Robinson

Anything more go on after a typical practice? MR: This week we have practiced on Monday and Wednesday and following that I stay after practice and talk to players and will usually get home about 6 p.m..

THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF MOUNTAINEER BASKETBALL

MEETING THE NEW HEAD OF BASKETBALL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Appalachian State basketball welcomes a new strength and conditioning coach this summer with the addition of Coty Greene. Green returns to Appalachian State are serving in a variety of roles before taking a position with Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins. What attracted you to come back to Appalachian State? CG: It was an easy decision to come back to Appalachian State University. As an alumnus, I am beyond excited to work for my alma mater. I love the town, the University and the athletics department. My family also just relocated to Boone so I saw an opportunity to do what I love, where I love, and be close to those who I love. I am excited to work under head coach Jim Fox. I love what he stands for and how he develops players, both on and off the court. Coach Sirignano is leading the strength and conditioning department in the right way and I was excited to rejoin his staff. What kinds of things do you expect out of the men’s basketball program heading into the 2016-17 season? CG: I expect the guys to get better every time they tie their shoes, whether it’s in the weight room, conditioning, or on the court. Even though my time here has been short, I can tell you that I am excited for the guys and this upcoming season. It’s been fun to watch the guys begin to compete in the weight room and during conditioning. Hopefully, we can create a hardworking and winning culture.

Coty Greene

What goals have you set? CG: Goals for this preseason and season are simple, keep the weight on they’ve added in the offseason, get them in condition and hopefully give them the best opportunity to stay on the court and become better basketball players. How do you elevate where the program is and take it to the next level? CG: We are taking the program to the next level by asking more and giving more. I tell the guys every day when they come in that I’m bringing the juice and I ask them to bring the juice daily, meaning if I give you energy you better give me energy. I’m asking more in the sense of conditioning and weight room and hoping it translates to a better season for the team.

THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF MOUNTAINEER BASKETBALL COMPLIANCE QUESTION OF THE MONTH When does basketball season begin? Sean Dotson (Compliance Director): Off-season practice can begin as soon as school starts, but these are limited hours compared to what the team can do in-season. The NCAA sets the first contest date each year for most sports, which in Men’s Basketball this year is November 11, 2016. Full in-season practices can begin 42 days before the first game, and in that 42day period, teams can have 30 days of required athletics activities. This gives basketball teams approximately a month to get ready for the upcoming season. Or, depending on the format/legalese: 17.3.2.1 Men’s Basketball. Preseason Practice - On-Court Practice. An institution shall not commence on-court preseason basketball practice sessions before the date that is 42 days before the date of the institution’s first regular-season contest. An institution shall not engage in more than 30 days of countable athletically related activities before its first regular-season contest. Any countable athletically related activities (e.g., conditioning, skill-related instruction) that occur within the 42-day period shall count against the 30 days of countable athletically related activities.

FAN QUESTION OF THE MONTH What was your favorite part of your European trip to Italy and Slovenia? How did the team bond while you guys were overseas? – John B. JF: “Thanks for the tough question. Everything was a blast. My favorite place we visited was Bormio. I love the town, the people and the old friends I was able to spend time with. The basketball arena in Bormio has great history with legends from Europe having played there and also American players like Michael Jordan. Our team is very close to begin with and the guys really like and care for each other. I would say this trip allowed a close team to become even closer. If you watched our guys navigate the streets of Venice or swim in Lake Garda, you could see how much they enjoy being around one another and as a coach, thats a great feeling. This will pay dividends during the season for sure.”
