OBJECT LESSON OR KIDS SERMON ITEMS NEEDED: Raisin Bran, Reese’s Cereal We’re talking about Apple Jacks today because Apple Jacks is part of a select group of cereals that combines two different flavors. There are plenty of single flavor cereals Cocoa Puffs, Corn Flakes, Honey Comb, Golden Puffs. But there are other cereals that take two or more tastes and bring them together. One of the oldest brands still going is Raisin Bran. Raisin Bran took the goodness of bran flakes and combined it with the sweet taste and good nutrition of raisins. More recently, someone got the bright idea to make a cereal out of one of the best candies, a candy that combines the flavors chocolate and peanut butter. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is now a best selling cereal. Of course if you can’t find it, you can always grab a box of Cocoa Puffs and mix it with Peanut Butter Crunch! In each one of these cereals, two flavors come together to be something greater than they were as individuals. The raisins make the bran taste better. And chocolate and peanut butter are always a perfect match. When we invite Jesus into our lives, we become something greater than we are alone. We begin a relationship with the God who made us and died for us. As we grow in our faith and get to know Jesus better, we become something better than we ever would be on our own. We become a person who loves like Jesus. We discover God’s plan for our lives. We become all God ever wanted us to be. God wants to make you into something better. That all starts when you invite Jesus into your heart. If you haven’t begun that walk, start today. Let Jesus in, and let the transformation begin!

LARGE GROUP LESSON BOTTOM LINE: God wants us to grow closer to Jesus. OBJECTIVE: Kids will learn the importance of growing closer to Jesus. KEY PASSAGE: Matthew 14:22-33, Jesus and Peter Walk on Water INTRO How many of you here like a boring breakfast? You know, a breakfast with one flavor and not a lot of variety? A lot of people prefer a plain, boring breakfast like a piece of dry toast. Some people like oatmeal, or grits, or Cream of Wheat. They keep it simple, and they like it that way, and they have no desire to change. Other people like some flavor at the breakfast table. These are the people who like to mix and match and try different things. These are the people who add cheese to their eggs. They like bacon, eggs, and sausage on their biscuits. They put raisins in their oatmeal and strawberries in their Cheerios. When it comes to cereal, there are many single taste flavors to pick, from Cocoa Puffs to Cheerios. But there are a number of brands that give you more than one flavor. Today’s cereal is one of the most beloved combination flavors because it mixes two very popular flavors: apples and cinnamon. Apple Jacks has gone through many variations over the years. Sometimes it’s hoops, sometimes it’s a variety of shapes. Sometimes it’s reddish in color, and sometimes it’s a mix of red and green. Through it all, Apple Jacks stayed a favorite of kids and adults for its delicious mix of apple and cinnamon flavors. Apple Jacks are a good reminder that when we combine our lives with Jesus, we become something new. We are no longer kids, but followers of Christ.

LARGE GROUP LESSON We become his disciples, and God can use us to spread his love to others. No one understood how Jesus could transform a life better than Peter. In today’s story, Peter gets just a small taste of how God can transform his life. READ MATTHEW 14:22-33 MAIN POINT Peter was one of the first men to leave his life behind and follow Jesus. He loved Jesus, and he would have done anything for him. Here in this story, Peter makes his first real leap of faith. He believes that if Jesus walks on water, he can walk on water too. Look what happens! Peter steps out on the water, and he begins to walk to Jesus. He keeps his eyes on Jesus, and he does something amazing. Following Jesus is a life changing decision. Just like Peter, we will get to know Jesus. We will be able to do incredible things. And if we keep our eyes on Jesus, he will make us successful in everything we do! DRIVE IT HOME Peter walking on the water was a true miracle, but what happened when Peter took his eyes off of Jesus? He began to sink! Jesus moved quickly to catch him, but he chastised Peter for doubting and taking his eyes off of Jesus. When we choose to follow Jesus, we need to renew that commitment every day. We need to stay focused on Christ. We need to give our day to him in the morning and every other time we stop to pray during the day. We need to spend time reading God’s word and doing Bible study. The more we know the Bible, the more we know Jesus. The more we know Jesus, the more we will become like him! Jesus has a plan for every one of us. He knows we are sinners and that we are selfish, but if we follow Jesus, he will teach us to be different. We will be peacemakers, not people who argue and quarrel with others. We will look for opportunities to help others, and when we see someone in need, we will be there to help out. With Jesus by our side, we become someone greater than we are on our own. We become Jesus’ hands and feet. If you’ve never invited Jesus into your heart, talk to your parents or a small group leader today. You and Jesus can become a force for good in your home, in your school, everywhere you go. CLOSE WITH A SIMPLE PRAYER Dear God, Help us to grow closer to Jesus so we can live a life that pleases you. In Jesus’ name, Amen
