MINISTRY HIGHLIGHT: APRIL 23 ______________________________________________ Bible Drill and Speakers’ Tournament TEXAS
Sherry Pittman had fond memories of being involved in Bible Drill as a child, and she wanted a similar experience for her daughter. So, she went to her pastor and told him someone needed to restart the program. “He said, ‘That would be you,’” she recalled with a laugh. Thirty-six years later, Sherry and her husband, Gene, still lead the program at First Baptist Church in Carrollton. They currently work with 52 children each week to grow more knowledgeable about God’s Word.

While she admits most of the youth are drawn by the competition and fun, it leaves a much deeper mark.

“They get excited about handling the Bible. Some never have really had much experience with the Bible, and I get to see how excited they become to really know God’s Word. Also, I see how they begin to realize the truth of verses they learn and begin to apply them to their lives,” Sherry said. In 2016, 819 youth representing 115 Texas Baptists churches participated in the Texas Bible Drill and Speakers’ Tournament because of the support of churches like ours. Pray for leaders and students with an unquenchable love for God’s Word to continue the program.
