Are we there yet? Reception Autumn 2015-2016

Every day is a succession of short and longer journeys to places near and far. These journeys maybe around our home from the kitchen to the bathroom, getting from home to school or travelling to a different town or country. In this topic we want the children to explore different journeys and forms of transport that enable us to get us from place to place. The children will develop an understanding of distance and how long it takes to get to and from somewhere. We will get them to explore questions including which vehicles move fast and which move slowly? How do vehicles move? Why don’t we come to school on an aeroplane? In December we will be sharing and performing the Nativity story. We will discuss in more detail the journey Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem and the journey of the three wise men and shepherds to see the baby Jesus. With a final investigation into how the children can design and create the best type of vehicle for Father Christmas!

Start Date: Tuesday 3rd November 2015 Engage:

End Date: Friday 18th December 2015

What do we know about vehicles?

St Clement’s playground will transform into a TRANSPORT MUSEUM for the afternoon of Tuesday 10th November. We would like to invite parents in from 2.15pm to explore our museum and find out information about the different vehicles.

We’re going on a journey!

The week beginning 16th November the children will embark on a fantastic journey! To see how many forms of transport they can use. We will be looking out for road signs, road markings, cycle paths, different crossings whilst following maps and timetables. Look out for further information….

Areas of Learning Focus: Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design All children will: . Talk about why things happen and how things work. . . . . . . . . . .

Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change. Know how to operate simple equipment. Show an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects. Understand that different media can be combined to create new effects. Manipulate materials to achieve a planned effect. Construct with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources. Select tools and technique needed to shape, assemble and join materials they are using. Use talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events. Build up vocabulary that reflects the breadth of their experiences. Question why things happen and gives explanations. Asks e.g. who, what, when, how.

Celebration:

Does Santa’s sleigh need upgrading???

Within this topic the children will be investigating the best form of transport for Father Christmas to deliver presents to all the children. In groups the children will discuss, design and create an alternative vehicle for Father Christmas. Parents, friends of the school and Father Christmas will be invited to the showroom for presentations and a vote on which vehicle would be the most appropriate.

Community Cohesion: This topic is all about being in our outdoor community as much as possible. We will go on journeys around the local environment thinking about how we keep safe on the roads and pavements. We will carry out vehicle surveys around the school. We will use public transport to see how trains and buses help us carry out journeys quicker.
