This photo shows a young Ariel (Arik) Sharon at the age of 14 years old (second from right). From a young age, Ariel was involved in agriculture and used to join his father Shmuel on the farm. It is extremely appropriate that he chose his final resting place to be on his ranch. Sharon was a huge political leader, an expert millitary man, but in his heart of hearts would always return to his agricultural background.

This picture was taken in 1955, and shows Ariel Sharon and his fellow soldiers in the Parachuting unit. The Paratroopers Brigade, known as the Tzanchanim, is an elite unit in the Israeli army with a history of carrying out special missions since the 1950s. One such mission (pictured) was operation Egged and its aim was to capture the Kuntila Fortress in Sinai which was deep in Egyptian territory. This mission, as with most of Sharon's missions, was carried out successfully.

This picture was taken at the Red Sea Summit in Aqaba in 2003 and shows Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon shaking hands with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas with President George Bush behind them. The summit's aim was to bolster the Roadmap to Peace, which was put together by the EU, UN, USA and Russia. Sharon made several attempts at peace and took major steps towards this important value, but unfortunately never found a willing partner.

This picture shows a smiling President Bush and Prime Minister Sharon. The two had a strong and warm friendship over the years and after Sharon's passing, Bush said about his Israeli counterpart that he was, 'A warrior for the ages and a partner in seeking security for the Holy Land and a better, peaceful Middle East'.

Ariel Sharon, pictured here at 19 years old, was a passionate zionist and a dedicated Haganah fighter. During the 1948 War of Independence, Sharon was shot three times in an attempt to releive the jews of Jerusalem. Sharon was a celebrated and extremely successful soldier, rising up the ranks quickly and being known as an aggresive and brilliant commander.

Sharon is pictured here during operation Olive Leaves. The operation was in response to Syrian attacks on Israeli fishing in the Sea of Galilee. Ariel Sharon was the overall commander of the operation, which was executed successfully. This is yet another example of Sharon's thriving and well admired military career.

This picture was taken during the six day war and shows Ariel Sharon at the forefront of the battle. The war saw Israel launch a preemptive strike against its arab neighbors and resulted in Israel winning an immense victory and gaining strategic land on the northern and southern borders. During the war, Sharon was in charge of the most powerful armored division on the Sinai front and he was heavily praised within Israel and the international community for his unique planning and innovative operations. Sharon's division is seen in this picture crossing the Suez canal towards Egypt in the Yom Kippur war. Sharon's actions and strategy was considered by many to cause the turning point in the war, which was a surprise attack by Syria, Egypt and other arab countries. His pioneering and innovative courage during war, together with his strong zionist ideology, was the recipe for Israeli victory, against all odds, during this war.

Sharon has been called Ben Gurion's disciple. The two men, pictured here in 1957, were driven by a staunch zionist ideology and acted only according to Israel's best interests. During this year in Israeli history, Sharon was still dealing with the aftermath of the 1956 Suez war prior to him starting his studies in the UK. Sharon was extremely sharp and well educated, a recipe for being the incredibly powerful leader he was.

Ariel Sharon was known as the Bulldozer for his actions in war. This impressive status was also attributed to him for his peace efforts, and his willingness to take any steps needed for peace as long as it was in Israel's best interest and would not compromise on Israel's security. The loss of Sharon is the loss of a heroic Israeli leader.
