2014 MEN’S RUGBY
GAME 02
1-0 OVERALL 0-0 RUGBY EAST CONFERENCE
vs. Penn State (1-0, 0-0 Rugby East Conference) Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 | 1 p.m. Anderson Rugby Complex | West Point, N.Y.
NATIONAL RANKINGS The Black Knights check in at No. 5 in the Canterbury Division IA Men’s Rugby Top 20 Poll, while the Nittany Lions sit directly below them at No. 6. “I think the poll is very flattering,” head coach Mike Mahan said. “We are a very young team, and I think we will have a better idea of what we have after a couple of tough games like this weekend with Penn State.” SCOUTING PENN STATE Coming off a season-long suspension, the Nittany Lions have not competed in a full season since 2012, but are still a force to be reckoned with in Division IA rugby. “Penn State is not only big and fit but they’re also talented,” Mahan said. “They have the skills. It’s rare in college rugby that you can find a team that has all of those ingredients and Penn State is one of them.” ARMY GAME PLAN While Army’s performance against Cornell was an impressive start to the year, they’ll have to change their game plan to match the talent and physicality that Penn State brings to the pitch. “I think we’re going to try to move the ball around a little bit more quickly and try to keep the pace of the game up,” said Mahan. “Hopefully some of those big bodies will start to get tired. That’s going to be important, so we’re going to have to have a good handling day and we’re going to have to keep the pace up.” LOOKING AHEAD The Black Knights will hit the road next Saturday, traveling to St. Bonaventure for a night game against the Bonnies. They’ll have a week off before returning to action Saturday, Oct. 11 when they host Iona at 7 p.m. from Anderson Rugby Complex.
