2012 NCAA ANN ARBOR REGIONAL
It took some juggling of his Term Ending Exam schedule but Army golfer William Park is off to Michigan and the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional. Park won the Patriot League Golf Championship and earned an individual berth to the NCAA Regionals. He will begin his 54 holes of play Thursday at U-M Golf Course, a par-71, 6,723-yard layout designed by Alister MacKenzie. The NCAA Ann Arbor Regional will host 10 individuals and 13 teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA Finals at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif. The NCAA Finals are comprised of the low 30 teams and six individuals not on qualifying teams from six regional sites. The 13-team regional includes USC, Oregon, Kent State, Virginia, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kennesaw State, TCU, Purdue, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Navy. Park began taking his final exams last weekend and made the trek to Michigan on Tuesday. He played a practice round on Wednesday and begins competition Thursday at 9:50. Individuals and teams will be repaired following each round. “I want to make smart choices and not have any regrets,” said Park. “I can’t get frustrated. When I smile I usually play pretty well so I am going to try and smile and enjoy the moment and enjoy playing with some of the best golfers in the country.” This will mark Park’s second trip to the NCAA Regionals. He was part of the Army squad last year that won the Patriot League Tournament and was assigned to the NCAA Tucson Regional. Park posted Army’s low score, 73-70-73—216, for a plus-three total at the par-
71 Omni Tucson National. “I’m definitely excited,” said Park. “I have some experience to call on from last year so I think that will help. I know what to expect. I know it’s a different level of players and I know what it’s like to play on those kind of courses under those kinds of conditions. “ Second-year Army head golf coach Brian Watts has some experience at the U-M Course. As the head coach at Oregon State, Watts helped Mitch Gillis win the Wolverine Open in 2006 with a six-under-par championship score. Gillis is playing in his first Nationwide event this week. “The course fits Will well,” said Watts. “There is a premium on driving and that is one of Will’s strength. Winning the Patriot League Championships has given him a lot of confidence.” HOW HE GOT THERE: Park earned his trip to the NCAA Regionals by winning the Patriot League Championship, his first career victory. Park blistered Bucknell Golf Course with a pair of one-under-par rounds of 69. His tournament total of 211 was one-over-par and six shots in front of his nearest competition. He was named Most Outstanding Golfer and first team All-Patriot League. LAST TIME AT NCAAs: As a team, Army has participated in the NCAAs 24 times and in the current regional format on 11 occasions. While the Black Knights competed as a team last year, the last time an individual competed was in 1984 when Dave Goodling posted a score of 76-74-76—226 at Bear Creek in Houston, Texas.

The U-M Golf Course has been the home to numerous championships including the NCAA Regional Championship, three Western Junior Championships, three Michigan Opens and one USGA Junior Championship.
The U-M Golf Course officially opened for play in 1931 and is one of six golf courses in the United States designed by MacKenzie, the architect of Augusta National. A multi-million dollar renovation was completed in the spring of 1994 by Arthur Hulls, a Michigan graduate. It included the return of original bunkers, improved tree planting and placement, construction of tee areas and an improved irrigation system. A new practice range was added to assist Michigan’s golf squads as well as a number of practice greens and sand traps. The popularity of golf carts necessitated large stretches of cart paths that partition landscaped medians around the course. The course is expected to play to 3,396 yards on the front to a par of 36. Two par-5s are included in the first four holes, the longest the 554-yard third. Four par-4s and a pair of par-3s are also included on the front. BRIAN WATTS HEAD COACH SECOND YEAR
®
Two years, two NCAA Regional appearances. Such is the story of Army head golf coach Brian Watts. In his first two years guiding the Black Knights’ program, Watts has led the team to a Patriot League Championship, mentored two individual conference champions, taken both the team and an individual to the NCAA Regional Tournament and been named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Watts came to West Point from Oregon State and has quickly put his mark on the team. In his inaugural season, Army won the team championship, individual championship and had two all-league players at the Patriot League Golf Championships. The 2010 fall season began with a fourth-place finish at the 10-team Central Connecticut State Invitational and a tough, one-point loss to Navy. The Black Knights placed second at the Service Academy Golf Tournament, finished 11th of 18 at the Classic at Shelter Harbor and wrapped up the fall season at the Memphis Intercollegiate with a 15th-place showing. Army began the spring season by beating Stetson in a dual match in Florida, finished ninth at the Triumph at Pauma Valley and was 17th at the Fireline Invitational. Army also finished 13th at the Quaker Invitational. The Black Knights placed fourth at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, were second of eight at the AIC Yellow Jacket Classic and finished seventh at the Rhody Invitational. Army then won the Patriot League Championship in the spring of 2011, taking the conference title at the Naval Academy Golf Course for its 10th championship. Senior Matt Krembel won the tournament, was named Most Outstanding Golfer and collected his fourth All-Patriot League honor and became Army’s seventh individual champion. Freshman Anthony Kim also collected All-Patriot League honors and joined Krembel on the first team, while Watts was named Coach of the Year as Army earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Army made its 24th appearance in the NCAA Championships at the Tucson, Arizona Regional, and placed 13th of 14 teams at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort. In a tie for 34th, William Park was Army’s top finisher. In addition to league honors, Kim was also named a PING All-Region selection. In Watts’ second season, Army finished second at the Patriot League championship, losing out on a team NCAA Regional bid by three strokes at the Bucknell Golf Course despite William Park’s individual victory. Park shot two under-par rounds to claim Army’s eighth individual championship and collected Most Valuable Golfer and first team allleague plaudits along the way. Kim repeated on the first team as well, tying for fourth. By winning the tournament, Park earned a spot in NCAA Regionals. He will compete as an individual at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional. The fall of 2011 season started with a sixth-place finish at the Battle of the Tetons where Kim shot a five-under-par 67 and tied for fourth. Army placed second sat the Bucknell Fall Invitational when Kim finished second and then was third in a tri-match with nationally ranked Georgia and Princeton.
After dropping the dual match to Navy, 7-4, the Black Knights were 15th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, third in the Service Academy Classic and 14th at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. Army began the spring season with a loss to Florida Atlantic in a dual match and a 10th-place showing at the Triumph at Pauma Valley. A 12thplace finish at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni National in Tucson, Ariz., was followed by a ninth-place finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate and a 16th-place finish at the Wolfpack Spring Invitational. That led to the Patriot League Tournament where Army was second after shooting three of its best rounds of the season with scores of 295290-296. Watts, a former professional golfer who led Oregon State to five NCAA team appearances in his nine seasons as head coach of the Beavers, was named Army’s head golf coach in June of 2010 A 1989 graduate of Western Oregon University, Watts is Army’s 18th head golf coach and replaced Jimmy Ray Clevenger, who retired after 20 seasons. Major Chad Bagley and Lt. Col. Rob Kewley served the role of interim head coach when Clevenger announced his retirement in the fall on 2009. Watts spent 13 seasons at Oregon State, including the last nine as head coach and led the team to four consecutive NCAA Regional berths. “It is an honor for me and my family and we couldn’t be more excited about West Point,” said Watts. “This is a very special place that is committed to the development of young men and women and I feel that my philosophy parallels that of the U.S. Military Academy. I’m excited to share my passion and experiences with the team and continue building this golf program for many years to come.” During the 2009-10 season, the Beavers ranked in the top 25 and finished 16th at the NCAA Championships at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. Watts helped guide senior Diego Velasquez to a host of national honors as he tied the course record with a six-under-par 66 on the way to a fourth-place finish and a first team All-America selection. Watts steered Oregon State to NCAA Regional appearances in each of his final four seasons, including a fourth-place finish in 2009-10. Among his many coaching accomplishments, Watts has been responsible for eight tournament titles, 11 individual championships, coached one Pac-10 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and led two players who participated in the NCAA Leadership Conference. Oregon State not only experienced NCAA success under Watts but in the Pac-10 as well, placing as high as third and in the top eight on nine occasions. The Beavers also collected accolades for their work in the classroom. In each of his first nine seasons, at least one Beaver was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team with a total of 29 players earning honors. Before being named head coach at Oregon State, Watts served as an assistant for both the men’s and women’s teams at OSU, helping guide both programs to NCAA appearances. Prior to embarking on his coaching career, Watts spent four years on various professional tours, including the Golden State Tour, the Space Coast Tour and the Canadian PGA Tour. After attending Oregon State for one year as a recruited football player, Watts earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Western Oregon State College (now Western Oregon University) in 1989. A native of Reedsport, Ore., Watts also boasts administrative experience serving as the Tournament Director for the 2000 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships. His teaching experience includes stints as the assistant professional at the Spring Hill Country Club and De Bell Golf Course. Watts and his wife Carrie have three daughters: Madeline (16), Olivia (14) and Alexandra (10). The family resides at West Point.
