FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK…. Greetings! My bulletin information is on the serious side serious today involving student safety and the lack of involvement of many parents concerning fundraising. Safety first.....

Late yesterday the Archdiocese of Washington DC sent a letter to all parents warning of a scam concerning student safety. Superintendent, Sr. Bernadette, of the Diocese of Arlington wrote, "Periodically, a scam has appeared in which someone calls a family, tells them their child has been kidnapped and asks for ransom money. To make the call more realistic, a scream is often heard in the background. Upon checking, the family then learns that the child is safe at school. Recently, one family in DC did receive a call like this." As far as we know, none of the Arlington Diocesan families have received this type of call. If anybody does, notify the police immediately. As with all matters with children, we work to keep SJES students safe and secure. The safety of your students is our highest priority. We are so far, geographically, from DC, but we never relax vigilance. Parents who allow Middle School students to walk home from school should continue to keep in touch electronically when students are traveling off school grounds. Since my first year at SJES (2011-12), I have noticed a gradual decline of parent involvement in both PTO and school sponsored fundraisers. The last couple of years the same few parents did all the work-Race for Education, Spring Spectacular, Breakfast with Santa, Chili Cook-off, Spirit Nights, etc. I am talking about 8-10 individuals out of over 100 families. I know I will not be here next year, but the simple fact is without increased participation, the PTO will CEASE TO EXIST. The school absolutely needs the $40K this organization raises yearly. Without this money, programs and staffing will suffer. We would have to charge every student $200 per year to make up for it. Without bake sales, field trips would be so expensive they would stop entirely. Multiple children families would be hit hardest. Tuition and fees do not cover the entire cost of educating a child here. Without fundraising there will be no G/T or Special Ed. program -those would be the first cuts. It costs over $7K per student when you factor in building costs, salaries, insurance, electricity, paper, etc. Catholic, private and charter schools CANNOT survive without parents volunteering and raising funds. In addition, the parish, Diocese and state give out scholarship money to many families. Many of those same families do not give back to the school of their time, even in a small manner. That must change if we are to grow. The recent Spring Spectacular was so poorly attended, if not for the overwhelming generosity of those who did attend, $7K would never have been raised. I am sorry to be so blunt, I care about this school and the families who want their children to attend this school. Ask yourself, "What have I done to help over the years?" The answer for too many is, "Not enough!" The PTO needs officers to step up, and folks to say, "I will do this!!" Please be one of them, instead of letting someone else do it. This is your school, please take ownership in all facets of it. Principals come and go, but the core teachers and families are here for decades. Finally, I would like to thank Mrs. Shaw and her 7th Grade parent helpers for putting together the 8th Grade Dinner Dance tonight. It will not be long until this group graduates on June 10. I will miss them. Have a great weekend and God bless you!
