Articles of Confederation A direct result of colonists experiences under royal governors, the King and Parliament Americans wanted all the rights to be controlled by their state governments Continental Congress was the model for the A.O.C. Authority for governance rested with the states, not with the people States were represented and each of the 13 states had one vote There was 13 different militaries, sets of rules, and types of money The national Congress could make laws, but could not levy taxes to support itself The national government could request money from the states, and they had no branches of government or court systems It needed changing!
The Constitution
It was written to solve problems from the weaknesses of the A.O.C.
It was based on the idea that governments comes directly from the people.
The first words are “We the People…”
Powers are shared between state and federal governments (this system is known as federalism)
Congress has two houses 1) Senate: 2 senators per state (not based on population) 2) House of Representatives: the number of representatives is based on the population of the state (South Carolina has 6 members)
Provides for a legislative, executive, and judicial branch
Has a president (Our current president is Barack Obama)
Both Documents
